FOREWORD

This specification covers the minimum requirements for the design and fabrication of air

cooled heat exchangers used in the petroleum and petrochemical industries.

This specification is intended to supplement API standard 661, Fourth Edition,

November 1997, which is part of this specification. Paragraph numbers of this

specification correspond to those in API 661. Paragraph numbers not found in API 661 are

new paragraphs.

Paragraph shall be highlighted as shown below to indicate the type of change from the API

Standard:

(Addition) New paragraph or supplemental requirements/clarifications to an existing

paragraph.

(Deleted) Paragraph deleted.

(Decision) A decision has been made as required.

(Substitution) Paragraph supersedes API in its entirety.

Substitute the terms “Buyer” and “Seller” for the corresponding terms “Purchaser” and

1. GENERAL

1.1. Scope

1.1.1. (Addition) The requirements stated herein are supplementary to be data

listed on the Air Cooled Heat Exchanger Specification.

1.1.2. (Addition) In addition, Supplier shall furnish 2 spare sets of gaskets for
cover Plate headers and blinded connections.

1.1.3. (Addition) Items to be supplied by the Buyer or construction contactor

include the following:

a. Foundation anchor bolts

b. Instrumentation and control with the exception of the actuators and

vibration cut-out switches. A dedicated PLC is not required;
Control for those devices shall be done via DCS.

c. External process piping

greater than 100 pounds per square inch absolute (686 kilopascals absolute).

1.5. Conflicting Requirements

1.5.1. (Substitution) Supplier shall identify any conflict between the order,
Specifications, and other referenced documents for review by the Buyer.
Supplier shall obtain written approval from the Buyer before proceeding
with work affected by a conflict.

clips, anchor bolt holes, and instrument connections.

3.1.3. (Addition) Field assembly drawings shall include location of pieces

requiring field assembly, exchanger item numbers and plot Iocation,
match mark number, legend defining match mark system, and bolt
list.

Supplier shall provide the following drawings:

a. Header detail drawing including tube and pass partition layout

Plug and gasket detail, and dimensions of parts.

b. Bundle detail including side frame, and tube support details.

c. Gasket detail.

d. Vibration switch.

e. Actuator.

3.1.4. (Addition) Calculations shall also include confirmation of nozzle loads

where loads exceed those shown in 4. 1. 10.

3.1.5. (Decision) Welding procedures and qualifications, weld map, and weld
procedure summary are required in accordance with Welding
Engineering Specification (Welding/NDE – General Welding
Specification For Pressure Retaining Components. American Welding
Society)

3.1.6. (Decision) Additional information shall include the following

a. Motor datasheet.
b. Lubrication datasheet
c. Spare parts recommendation
3.1.8. (Addition) When transport sketches are required, these shall show the
exact outline dimensions, dimensions, and orientation of projections, as
well as the total mass and center of gravity of each parcel, The sketches
shall be submitted in accordance with the PO, or at least 60 days prior
to shipment.

Where necessary, the location of lifting slings shall be painted or

otherwise indicated un the case or prime of equipment and on the
transport sketch.

3.2.1. h. (Addition) Nameplate rub-off.

4. DESIGN

4.1. Tube Bundle Design

4.1.1.2 (Addition) To avoid differential lateral movement between header and

the piping manifold due to thermal expansion, thrust blocks shall be
provided on multibay units.

4.1.1.13 (Addition) The minimum fin type clearance shall be 1/4 of an inch
(6.35 mm).

4.1.3.1 (Substitution) the maximum and minimum design temperatures for

pressure parts shall be specified by the contractor, and shall be
according to its process conditions.

4.1.3.4 (Substitution) The selection of fin-type shall be based on the

operating inlet fluid temperature.

4.1.9.6 (Addition) Ring joint gaskets and grooves shall be in accordance with
ASME B16.20.

4.1.9.23 (Addition) When noted on the datasheet, the designation RFSF shall
mean a raised face-type flange with RMS (139-278AA) finish.

4.1.11.13 (Addition) Allowable types of finned construction are shown below

with the maximum process inlet temperature for each type. Alternate
designs require Supplier’s prior approval. Footed fins are not allowed
in cyclic service.

4.1.9.23 (Addition) Connections in lethal service Shall be flanged. Slip-on -

4.2. Air-Side Design

4.2.1.4 (Addition) Mechanical and instrument components shall also be

rated for low temperature operation at the minimum ambient
temperature less 25 degrees F (14 degrees C).

4.2.1.5 (Addition) For forced type exchangers, the space between adjacent
bays in a common bank shall be sealed to prevent exhaust air
recalculation.

4.2.2.1 (Addition) Noise shall be limited to a maximum sound pressure level

of 85 dBA at 3 feet (1 meter) from the fan ring according with API
661.

4.2.3.11.2 (Substitution) The pneumatic actuator shall be equipped with a

positioner.
4.2.10.25 (Addition) Louvers shall be the opposed action type.

4.3. Structural Design

4.3.2.2 (Decision) Shop vibration tests are required in the following cases:

a. For one typical bay of shop preassembled induced draft units.

b. For each run-in test of knocked down units or shop

preassembled forced draft units.

4.3.3.2 (Substitution) Live loads shall be in accordance with Structural

Engineering Specification ESP-H-2700: Structural Data For
Mechanical Equipment.

4.3.5.5 Ladders and platforms shall be in accordance with Mechanical

Engineering Specification ESP-H-2700.

5. MATERIALS

5.1. General

5.1.1. (Substitution) The use of cast iron for pressure parts is prohibited.
5.1.1.1. (Addition) The use of asbestos is prohibited.
5.1.1.2. (Addition) The use of welded pipe is prohibited. Rev 1

6. FABRICATION

6.1. Welding

6.1.1.1. (Addition) Header welding shall be in accordance with Welding

Engineering Specifications ESP-H-1700 and American Welding
Society

7.2 Quality Control

Exchangers shall have a shop run-in test for the following:

a. Shop assembled units.

b. One or more bays of knocked down units. The number of tests shall be noted
by the inquiry or PO.

8.2.3 (Addition) Also apply 2 coats of Suppliers standard finish paint.
