Homeostasis

Subject Teacher: Roylene Mae E. Samontina

Subject: General Biology II

Class: Grade 12-Graciousness

Time: 1:00-2:00 p.m.

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the students are expected to;

1. Know what is homeostasis;

2. Identify the organs of homeostasis;

3. Explain the importance of homeostasis

D. Concepts:

a. Homeostasis- any self-regulating process by which biological

systems tend to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are
optimal for survival. If homeostasis is successful, life continues; if
unsuccessful, disaster or death ensues. The stability attained is actually
a dynamic equilibrium, in which continuous change occurs yet relatively
uniform conditions prevail.
b. Vasodilation -is the widening of blood vessels. It results from
relaxation of smooth muscle cells within the vessel walls, in particular in
the large veins, large arteries, and smaller arterioles. The process is the
opposite of vasoconstriction, which is the narrowing of blood vessels.

III. Procedure

A. Preliminaries

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

a. Greetings:

“Good afternoon class.” “Good afternoon ma’am.”

b. Opening prayer:

“Hershe, please led the prayer.” Hershe: “Let us put ourselves in the
presence of the Lord. In the name of the
Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit.

Praise be thy name of our Lord Jesus

Christ”.

Others: “Now and forever, Amen.”

All: “In the name of the Father, and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit Amen.”

“Please be seated.”

c. Checking of attendance:

“Jinne is there any absentees today?” Jinne: “There are no absentees today. All
are present ma’am.”

B. Motivation

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“Our topic for today is about this”

(Teacher will present a picture showing “A

day at a sauna” to the class.)

“So who can give me some of your DG: “The picture shows a scenario at a
observations about the picture? DG? sauna. The temperature in the sauna is
very high..”

“Okay thank you GD. How about you Bryan: “ If the temperature in the sauna
Bryan?” is high, there will be physical responses
of our body such as redness in the skin
and sweating.

“Thank you also Bryan. So Bryan’s right, Necel: “ Ma’am our body responded that
there will be physical responses of our body way in order to cool down our
due to the high temperature. The most temperature.
observable responses are the redness of our
skin or also known as the vasodilation and
sweating.” So, why is it that our body
reponded that way, Necel?

d. Yes, that is correct and that

phenomenon is called
Homesotasis. Homeostasis-
any self-regulating process by
which biological systems tend
to maintain stability while
adjusting to conditions that are
optimal for survival.
If homeostasis is
successful, life continues; if

continuous change occurs yet
relatively uniform conditions
prevail.

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

“So to understand more about

homeostasis, I prepared some activity fr
you.”

(The teacher will present a powerpoint

slide.)

“Class, discuss the question below and

be ready to share your answers with the
class?”I wll give you 10 minutes to do
all of these.

“Is it correct class?”

“Okay, that’s correct. Thank you for

sharing your answers.
All: Yes, ma’am.
(After the activity, continuation of the
discussion) (Possible answers of the students : 1.Feedback to establish
that sports drinks (and water) are targeted at replacing

of homeostasis. 2. Discuss what might happen if these substances were
not replaced into the body (tiredness, dizziness, ultimately
death!)
3. Elicit the idea that you need to maintain certain things
in the body at set level if your are to function properly)

Elgene, can you give one organ of

homeostasis? Elgene: Brain ma’am.

“That’s correct Elgene. The brain

dioxide levels.
Another organ, Jocelmar?

“Yes, the muscles increase body

temperature. The next organ is the skin. Jinni: Ma’am, the skin helps regulate our body
Jinni, what is the function of the temperature.
function in relation to homeostasis?

Very good Jinni. The next organ is the

lungs. Hershe, what is tha function of Hershe: Ma’am, the lungs remove carbon dioxide.
the lungs?

Thank you, Hershe. Yes, the lungs

remove carbon dioxide from our body
through respiration.

Ted, can you tell me the two last organs

of homeostasis. Ted: Ma’am, the pancreas and the kidney.

Thank you, Ted. The pancreas regulate

blood glucose levels and the kidney
regulate water and ion mineral levels.

Any questions?
All: None ma’am.
Get one 1/2 crosswise of paper.

C. Lesson Proper

IV. Evaluation

Direction: look each of the scenario. Write what you think is destabilized. For each
picture write 2 things that are changing in the body.

For example :

Drinking Cold water

1. Amount of water in blood increased
2. Body temperature decreased

1. 5.

2.
3.

V. Assignment

Study the next topic and answer the Enrichment Activity on a one whole sheet of
paper on pp. 174.
