GRADE 7 MATHEMATICS
I.CONTENT : CONCEPT NOTE # 8 Venn Diagrams and Set Operations .
Numbers and Number Sense. Chapter 1 Sets.
The intersection, union, and difference of sets, as well as the complement of a set, can also be represented using Venn
diagrams.
Ex. Draw a Venn diagram representing the following set operations.
1. A U B 4. B - A
2. A ∩ B 5. A’
3. A – B

1. A U B refers to the elements found in A and 2. . A ∩ B means the common elements of sets A and B .So, the
in B , that is , the combined elements of A and B. Venn diagram has a shaded region of intersection of the circles
Therefore , the shaded region should include the representing A and B.
regions of A and B.

3. A – B means the set of elements in A but 4. B – A describes the elements found in B but not in A Thus, the
not in B. Thus, the diagram must shade the region shaded region includes the region of set B excluding the region
that covers set A excluding the region where it where intersects set A.
intersects set B.

5. B’ includes all the elements in the universal set not found in A. So, the shaded region of the diagram
simply excludes the region of set A.

Let U = { x/x is a counting number from 1 to 10 } , A = { 1,3,4,5,6 } , and B = { 2,3,6,7 }.Draw a Venn diagram for
the given sets and then use it to identify the elements that correspond to the following operations:
1. A U B 4. B - A
2. A∩ B 5. A’
3. A – B
The diagram shows sets A and B and the universal set U.

From the diagram , we see that:

1. A U B = { 1,2,3,4,5,6,7}
2. A ∩ B = { 3,6}
3. A – B = { 1,4,5 }
4. B – A = { 2,7 }
5. B’ = { 1,4,5,8,9,10}

II.OB JECTIVES:
A. To be able to draw a Venn diagram to represent the set operation
B. To be able to identify the elements that correspond to the operations.

III. ASSESSMENT: A # 8
Answer the following.
1. Draw a Venn diagram representing the following sets or set operations.
a. B’
b. ( A ∩ B ) ’
c. ( A U B ) ‘
d. A ∩ B ‘
2. Do you find the construction of Venn diagrams easy ? What part is not clear to you ?
3. Let U = { x/x is a counting number from 1 to 10 } , A = { x is a prime number less than 10 } , and
B = { 2,3,5 ,9 }.Draw a Venn diagram for the given sets and then use it to identify the elements that correspond
to the following operations:
1. A U B 4. B - A
2. A ∩ B 5. A’
3. A – B
4. How do you use Venn diagrams to show set operations ?
