The new Seven Wonders
At a ceremony in Lisbon, the results of a worldwide vote to choose the New Seven Wonders of the World
were revealed. In comparison to the ancient world's wonders, the current list was compiled after tens of
millions of votes were cast by people all over the world. Alison Roberts provides the following report:

Take a look at the plot.

The seven wonders were selected in a global poll in which a

hundred thousand people took part. At the end of a glitzy
ceremony in Lisbon, one by one, by phone and by text
message, the winners were declared in random order.

The Great Wall of China was the first, and it is said to be the
only monument visible from space. Neil Armstrong, the first
man to walk on the moon, presented the certificate to
Chinese officials. Then there was Petra, Jordan's stone-
carved ancient city, whose royal family spearheaded a
movement to save it.

After an appeal by Brazil's president for his compatriots to

vote, the Statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro
also made the cut. Other winners from the Americas were
Machu Picchu in Peru and Chichen Itza in Mexico, both of
which are examples of ancient civilizations unknown to
Antipater of Sidon, the Greek writer who compiled the
original list of wonders two thousand two hundred years
ago.

The Taj Mahal and Rome's Colosseum, which was mentioned in its introduction as a sign of joy and misery,
were the final two wonders. That was announced by Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu, who hosted the event
alongside Oscar winners Ben Kingsley and Hilary Swank.

The Pyramids of Giza, the only wonder still standing on the original list, had been made an honorary
member, ensuring a mention. Egyptian leaders, on the other hand, shunned the whole project as being too
commercial. Bernard Weber, the ceremony's Swiss organizer, revealed his next project at the ceremony's
conclusion: a global survey on the world's seven natural wonders.
