Assessment/s
At the end of the activity students will choose between pictures to demonstrate their knowledge of how
to correctly perform arm circles, alternating punches, and the mountain pose, and be able to differentiate
between the three types of activities (Karate Warm up, Karate Fitness, and Karate Relaxation) they
learned throughout the lesson.

They will also be asked to show if they enjoyed the activity by giving thumbs up, or a thumbs down if
they didn’t enjoy it. For higher functioning students at the end of the activity, they will choose their
preferred activity and explain why. They will also talk about warmup and cooldowns.

Safety Precautions
Floor should be swept and free of dirt, liquid, or

hazard for students to potentially slip on. If there is
any glass or potentially hazardous objects such as
unstable furniture nearby, please be cautious when
deciding where to stage the exercise area.

Behavioral Objectives
Motor 1. With a verbal prompt students will perform arm circles, standing with their feet
shoulder-width apart, arms extended and parallel to the floor, and rotating tips of
arms in both the forwards and backwards rotational pattern 4 out of 5 times.
2. With verbal and visual prompts, students will perform alternating punches with their
hands in a fisted position, while in a staggered position (stand hips width apart with
their dominant foot placed slightly higher than their non-dominant foot) 4 out of 5
times.
3. With a verbal prompt, students will be able to maintain balance in Mountain Pose
using proper form (feet shoulder width apart, head up and looking straight, and
arms down by sides with palms facing outwards) for 30 seconds 4 out of 5 times.
Cognitive 1. Students will verbalize at least 2 of the 3 cues for alternating punches (“Eyes on the
block, punch”, “punch 1, punch 2”, “one arm, 2 arm”) when asked during class
closure 4 out of 5 times.
Affective 1. After a verbal command by the teacher, students will tell their classmates online,
“Great job!”

For our first competitor! Let's use back elbows to put them
in their place! “water, water, a

“Back elbows are similar to the forward elbow strikes we
have already learned. Only this time, we will be using our
other hand to assist our striking elbow, and we will be
pushing our elbow across our sides and behind our backs. “1,2,3, eyes on me”

This is our biggest competitor yet! Let try using our legs and
do side kicks to take them out of the contest!

“Side kicks start out like our front kicks. We start in the
staggard position, and bring our legs up with our knees
bent. However, this time instead of kicking straight in front,
we rotate slightly and kick from the side. We will practice
alternating with both legs.

This skill can be a bit difficult so just do your best!

“If you are seated, start with one of your hands low and
across your body, then quickly bring your arm up across
your body ending with it above your head and on the
opposite side you started on.”

Side-kicks- Students will start by standing with their non

dominant foot forward and their dominant foot back
(staggered position). Then they will bring up their dominant
leg and bend at the knee. They will then follow through with
a kick making sure toes stay up. Then return their foot back
to their starting position. Repeat on the other side.

before our final two and most difficult matches!

“For an upwards punch, we will need to start in the

staggered position, but to complete the strike we will need
to start by bring down one of our arms near our hips. Then
while keeping our elbows slightly bent, we will bring our
fists upwards landing our punch in front and above our
heads.”

“This skill can be done either standing or seated.”

Upward Punches- students will stand hips width apart with

their dominant foot placed slightly higher than their non-

Looks like we’re down to our final two Cobra Kai members
and these definitely seem like they are the hardest of them
all! We’ll have to combine our skills in elbow strikes and
front kicks to even have a chance!

“We’ll start out by doing one back elbow with each arm,
then continue the combination by doing front kicks with our
left and right legs! We will continue this pattern until we
finish the match!”

If you are seated, follow along with the back elbow strikes,
but instead of kicking punch three times at low, medium,
and high.

Combine skills
Explain the combination of the skills while the students
follow along for 10 seconds before each skill. Give students
a demonstration of each of the skills before asking them to
perform the skill.

non-dominant foot. Then to elbow strike students will keep
their arms bent at the elbow, bring up the arm horizontally

Luckily Miyagi-Do has taught us how to overcome so many

big obstacles, I think we have what it takes to push on and
still compete against our last opponent.

Looks like we’ve managed to make it to our final

competitor, and they’re the leader of Cobra Kai! If we can
take on this final test and defeat our final opponent we can
forever stop the bullying from Cobra Kai!
Our best chances of winning this fight will be to use a combo
of Palm Strikes and Side Kicks! Let's do it!

“If you are seated, start with one of your hands low and
across your body, then quickly bring your arm up across
your body ending with it above your head and on the
opposite side you started on.”

Remember if you are seated, follow along with the palm

low across your body, and then alternate arms!
