IS3151 Technical Writing

Instructions to Candidates


● This examination is a take home assignment.
● This paper consists of one (1) question.
● Please pick the same topic as you did for the mid-semester assignment.
● The marking criteria is indicated in page 3.
● Upload the completed submission onto the LMS before 11:59 pm 10th December
2020.
● All examinations are conducted in accordance with the Rules & Regulations
currently in force at the University.
● The assignment must be written in English.

Choose the same topic as you did for your mid-semester exam and write a short
review paper on the topic.

“A sustainable greywater purification system for rural villages”

“Integration of renewable energy in smart grids for tropical environments”

“Big data analytics for climate change management”

Your writing should adhere to the following format;

• At least 2500 words not exceeding 3000.


• Font: Times New Roman, Size:12, Justified with 1.5 spacing, Margins: 2cm all
around.
• Include at least 12 references from credible sources. (Referencing Style: IEEE).
• Please include your index number, registration number and topic name clearly
at the top of your submission.
• Submission should be a MS Word document.
• Do not divide document into two columns.

NOTE: Real review papers are far more thorough than what is expected from this
assignment. The purpose of this assignment is to gauge your understanding on the layout
of different scientific documents, it’s formatting/style, language and your research skills
that were discussed throughout this course.

Usage of the appropriate layout of a review paper, with appropriately written 25
sections.
Writing skills pertaining to each section 10
Critical discussion of past research;
• Rationale: Discussion of current issues relating to the topic, and 8
motivation.

• Assumptions, limitations, deficiencies, lack of clarity, methodological

weaknesses, gaps, disagreements and problems in past research. Pros and
cons, similarities and differences of past methods, their applicability to 10
current issues. Issues not addressed before.

• Holistic overview of past research with explanation of relevance to
current topic
Correct referencing 15
Language, Grammar and Presentation (graphs, figures, tables) 10
Total 100

*You are expected to modify and expand the initial literature review you
conducted for the mid-term for this review paper (if you just copy paste the
same content, you will be awarded zero marks for that section).

*If it is found that you have plagiarized, you will receive an immediate fail
grade.
