SEMO1332: NAVAL ARCHITECTURE 1

Project 1: Design Make and Test Project

[PLO2, PLO3, PLO9 & PLO10]

Rules and Guidelines for Project 1

1. Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to have students work as part of a team to design and
construct a buoyant vessel for stability assessment. Students will work as part of a team
on all phases of the Design Process, starting with the problem definition and ending with
a competition. Cooperation and teamwork are essential components for this project.
Eligible materials will be specified, however, the vessel design and construction are
purposely undefined to encourage creativity in the development and implementation of
each design. Each student’s score will also be based in part on a peer evaluation of her or
his contribution to the team effort.

2. Problem Statement
Using only Corrugated Cardboard Box sheet and transparent cellotape tape width 24 mm
as construction materials, each team is required to design and build a buoyant vessel for
stability assessment. All entrant vessels will be attempting to load weight on board the
vessel.

3. Criteria and Constraints

3.1 Hull types
a) Monohull is a hull that runs on one continuous, wetted surface under full plane
b) Type of hull allowed: Displacement hull, semi displacement hull or planning hull.

3.2 Hull size

a) The boat particulars are given below.
i. LOA = 0.50 – 0.60 m
ii. Dext. = 0.10 – 0.15 m
iii. Bext. = 0.15 – 0.20 m

b) If the as built size is less or more than the allowed size, the team will be disqualified.

3.3 Hull construction and materials

a) Boat must be made with the Corrugated Cardboard Box sheet, connected or joint using
transparent cellotape tape with width of 24 mm. All materials MUST be pre-approved
by the Lecturer.
b) The boat may not be permanently enclosed. However, during competition, the boat deck
is allowed to be covered to avoid water entrance.

c) Stacking of Corrugated Cardboard Box sheet is NOT ALLOWED for the skin hull.
However, stacking is allowed for structure construction ONLY with the maximum pre-
competition mass of each vessel is 1 kg.
d) The hull may not be wrapped in plastic, duct tape, shrink wrap, or anything else. Only
the seams and joints may be cellotape on the outside side only, not the entire boat or
large surfaces.
e) Boats must be free of sharp edges, pointy objects, or any other menace.
f) The entire hull and superstructure must be Corrugated Cardboard Box sheet only.
g) Any external projections, lifting foils, exhaust pipes. etc., projecting beyond the sides
of the hull is NOT permitted.

3.4 Platform size

a) For the purpose of locating the weight on board, a platform made from Corrugated
Cardboard Box sheet with maximum size length and width of 15 cm x 12 cm,
respectively must be prepared and located at the midship of the vessel.
b) This platform must be a single platform and no wall surrounding the platform.
c) The platform must be fixed at half of the depth of the vessel.

3.5 Container Box for Weight loading

a) The container with dimension of L x B x D of 5 cm x 4 cm x 5cm, respectively,
must be constructed minimum of 10 units, made from corrugated cardboard box.
b) This container box will be used as a container to place the payload.

3.6 Payload
a) Either green beans or red beans to be used as the payload inside the container box.
b) The payload must be 100% filled inside the container box.
c) The weight of container box with the payload inside must be weigh and recorded
prior to the testing.

4. Performance Evaluation:
1. Performance evaluation will be based on the stability of the vessel.
2. If the vessel can hold ALL the containers for 20 seconds without fail then the vessel
will be declared as the most stable vessel.

5. General Rules
1. All parts of the vessel must be readily available for inspection by judges online.
2. Each vessel/team must have a name (same for vessel & team) that is to be clearly
displayed on the vessel using permanent marker (creativity is highly encouraged!).
3. Permanent markers or other decorative items may be used to visually enhance the
appearance of the vessel provided they do not affect its durability or performance.
4. Round basin or container must be prepared by the students.
5. Vessels will be inspected by the judges before and after the competition. Any team
found using materials other than allowed, will be automatically disqualified and will be
eligible to receive no more than 60% for their project grade.

6. Peer Assessment
Student's final grade will be determined by the results of a Peer Evaluation on each team
member's contribution to the team effort. The Peer Evaluation surveys will be conducted
unannounced and will be completed by all team members. The results of the evaluation will be
confidential; only the course lecturer will have access to the results.

7. Evaluation
1. Progress and Final Reports (30%). 2 Weekly progress report and 1 Final report.
2. Pre-competition design quality and physical structure quality assessment (30%). A
pre-recorded or online real time assessment need to be made before the
assessment.
3. Performance (40%). You need to perform your own testing, pre-recorded or online
real-time.

8. Performance in Competition
Most stable vessel 10 Points (equivalent to 40 marks), Next stable vessel 9.5,
Next stable vessel 9.0 . . . (Minimum of 7 Points for Teams that Enter the Competition)

9. The Prize
Team with the fastest time will be declared the Winning Team and will receive a prize worth
RM30.00/team upon returning to UTM for claim.

11. A Guideline: For Progress Reports and Final Report

The reports must be written in standard technical report format, explaining the development of
the team structure and organisation as well as the design development. Students are encouraged
to include the thinking process, critical assessment of the various concepts being considered
and how decisions are made on a particular design choice.
