INTRODUCTION

Watching shows and television has always been an integral part of every Filipino
home. In the modern context, we can already access all of these shows in our cellphones,
tabs and laptops. This is one form of pleasure and relaxation and at the same time to be
informed on what’s going on in the world around us.
Are all the shows that we watch the same? Who do you think is the audience of these
shows? What is the purpose? Read on to know more.

Viewing materials are things that are designed to be seen, watched or viewed. Examples
are:

newsflash a single item of important news that is being
broadcasted separately and often interrupts other
shows
internet-based program a program that is informative and can be discussed

a factual record or report
video a digital recording of an image or a set of images
Genre is the term for any category of literature or other forms of art. In simpler
explanation, genre is a group or category. Some examples are as follows:

GENRES DEFINITION
1. ACTION a story similar to adventure but involves danger,
risk, and/or chance, often with a high degree of
fantasy.
2. ADVENTURE A story about a protagonist who journeys to distant
places to accomplish something; intended to
provoke excitement and/ or nervous tension into
audience

3. COMEDY tells about a series of events intended to provoke

laughter
4. DRAMA mainly focuses on character development; relies on
the emotional and relational development of realistic
characters
5. FANTASY speculative fiction outside reality; about magic and
supernatural forces
6. HISTORICAL a fiction film showing past events or set within a
historical period
7. HORROR intended to provoke fear in audience
8. MUSICAL the characters are singing
9. MYSTERY stories focus on a puzzling crime, situation, or
circumstance that needs to be solved
 10. POLITICAL deals with political affairs
11. ROMANCE dwelling on the elements of romantic love
12. SCIENCE FICTION similar to fantasy but it uses scientific
(SCI-FI) understanding to explain the universe that the film
takes place in; intended to show the distant future

Every viewing material, has an intended purpose and target audience. Purpose is the
reason why a certain material was created. The target audience are the people/group of
people who will watch the show/material.
