Question no 1:

(A)

In the first scenario, the company faced a problem of breakdowns in the production plant, and the company
management is going to replace it. They management want to have an insight of the investments decision in
terms of its costs and benefits for the company. Since, the problem is of a nature that is only related to the
Pioneer Company, and can't be generalized to the whole industry in which the company is operating, the
research conducted would be an applied research. The company has its market share, sales volume, capital
expenditure availability, particular operational and organizational plans, and the related factors that are
different from other companies. The researcher will use and analyze the companies own data, and draw
some conclusions from it that will help in the buying decision for the machinery of the production plant.
Since, the research is applied research the company's own research and development department can also
conduct it by assigning this task to some internal researcher. In case of the absence of an internal researcher
and research and development department, the company can also outsource and hire an external researcher
for this purpose. It will be a decision bound to such limiting factors.

(B)

In the second scenario the research conducted would be of basic research because it will be based on the
conclusions that a particular marketing strategy that had worked very well until now has suddenly become
ineffective.. In this case, the researcher will conduct a basic research using the sample data of the
company’s past strategy, and after careful analysis they will come up with results. The results from this
research would be than used by the company as a tool for making decisions for making new marketing
strategy.

Since, the research is a basic research in nature, discussing a subject matter that is related to a particular
company or business problem, the researchers who would undertake it will be external researchers.
