Structure Function
superior vena cava It conveys venous blood from the upper half of the body and
returns it to the right atrium.
right pulmonary It receives blood that has been oxygenated in the alveoli and
veins returning it to the left atrium.
right pulmonary The right pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from
artery the right ventricle to the lungs.
right atrium Receives deoxygenated blood from the superior and inferior
venae cava and passes this blood through the tricuspid A-V
valved to the right ventricles.
atrioventricular When the ventricles contract, atrioventricular valves close to
valve prevent blood from flowing back into the atria.
inferior vena cava The inferior vena cava is ultimately responsible for the
transport of almost all venous blood (deoxygenated) from
the abdomen and lower extremities back to the right side of
the heart for oxygenation.
right ventricle  It is responsible for pumping oxygen-depleted blood to
the lungs.
chordae tendineae It anchors atrioventricular valves to papillary muscles and
prevent valves from opening in the wrong direction.
papillary muscles the papillary muscles pull on the chordae tendineae and help
to open the cusps when the ventricles are relaxing and filling
with blood.
septum The septum separates the atria and ventricles in such a way
that it forms a barrier between the heart chambers, and this
prevents mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
left ventricle The left ventricle receives oxygenated blood from the left
atrium via the mitral valve and pumps it through
the aorta via the aortic valve, into the systemic circulation.
semilunar valve It prevents backflow from the main artery back into the
associated ventricle during ventricular diastole.
left atrium Its primary roles are to act as a holding chamber for blood
returning from the lungs and to act as a pump
to transport blood to other areas of the heart.
left pulmonary It carries blood from the left lung into the left atrium of the
veins heart
left pulmonary The left pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood from
artery the left ventricle to the lungs.
aorta It carries blood away from your heart to the rest of
your body.
