Learning Objectives:
Shows some ways of adopting global health initiatives to local or national context.
Key Concepts
Global health initiatives are programs set in motion by the United Nations through the
World Health Organization and in partnership with the World Bank.
Specific health problems including but not limited to emerging and re-emerging
diseases
Climate change
Environmental sanitation
Mental health
Tobacco regulation
Alcohol use

A. ROLL BACK MALARIA- is a global effort to reduce the number of deaths from
malaria infection through heightened prevention tools, rapid response to outbreaks,
development of new anti-malarial products, and effective treatment of the infection.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
3. TO PROTECT POOR AND VULNERABLE POPUPLATIONS FROM TB, TB/HIV AND MULTI DRUG-
RESISTANT- TB (MDR-TB)
4. TO SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TOOLS AND ENABLES THEIR TIMELY AND EFFECTIVE
USE
This new vaccines which could help reduce the number of deaths in children aged 5 years
old and below includes:
1. Price and tax measures to reduce the demand for tobacco, and
1. Recognizes the close ties between the harmful use of alcohol and the
socio-economic development of a nation
2. Builds and supports other global health initiatives like the global
strategy for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.
2. To establish and strengthen national policies and plans for the prevention and
control of non- communicable diseases.
Quick Wins- are actions that can be immediately used within the community or
locate to produce effective results. Below are some examples of UNDP’s QUICK WINS:
Children are provided with free school meals and take-home rations using
locally produced foods.
Provision for poor farmers of affordable supplies of soil nitrogen and other
soil nutrients.
Active national and local campaigns to reduce violence against women and
children.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
AIDS – Acquired Immune- Deficiency Syndrome. It is a serious and most often fatal
communicable disease of the immune system transmitted through body fluids
like blood, plasma and mucous usually by blood transfusion, sexual contact,
and use of contaminated syringe.
ALCOHOL – a gateway drug which depresses the central nervous system. It is an active
ingredient in beverages like brandy, beer, rum and wine.
GLOBAL HEALTH - the health of the world as a whole, the area of study,
research and practice which gives priority on improving
and achieving equal health for all people worldwide.
TOBACCO - the leaves of the tobacco plant which are dried and
prepared for smoking or ingestion.
TUBERCULOSIS – infection of the lungs but may also occur in other body
parts as caused by a bacteria which causes lesions (cut or
break in tissue)
Exercises/ Activities
What to do:
1. Conduct an individual research or survey on health issues that our country are
dealing with either through internet, watching news on TV or doing an interview with
your local officials and health workers (following health safety protocols).
2. List down 5-6 health issues that you gathered from your research in the table.
3. In each health issue cite one health initiative that should be applied to address such
issue.
4. There is a table below that shows health issues and health initiatives of different
countries that serves as your guide.
5. Example is given for you to be guided. For more clarifications on health initiative
refer to key concept above.

implemented by the Philippine Government? Support your answer.

that are implemented in our local and national government.
2. Identify which health initiatives are fully and not fully implemented.
3. Cite some local and national reasons why it is difficult to implement global health
initiatives.

1. Observe from your own local community. Write at least three (3) health issues that
your barangay or town is facing at this time.
2. In each health issues, you have to propose health programs and strategies to address
such issues and concerns.

1. Choose one global health initiative of the World Health Organization and write a poem
about it. Include the aims of the initiative and its importance to global health. (see
Key Concept for your reference)
3. Your poem must be composed with minimum of three (3) and maximum of four (4)
stanzas.
