Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. identify different reading styles for specific purpose
2. use appropriate reading styles
3. appreciate the importance of reading styles

• Greeting
Good day everyone! Good day, ma’am!
• Prayer
Before we start our lesson for today, let
us pray.
The name of the Father, the Son, the
Holy Spirit, Amen. Our Father, who art in
Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy
kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread and forgive us our sins as we
forgive those who sins against us. Do not
bring us to the test but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Class monitor do we have any

absentee/s today? None ma’am

Very good! It seems everybody is

here today.

I hope you are doing good in using your

time to recreate yourself despite of
pandemic. We are now facing a big challenge
in the field of education because of COVID 19.
For now, come and join me as I take you in an
exploration of learning and discovery.
Together, we will engage in different activities
that will surely sharpen your reading skills and
mind.

B. Activity

Let us now begin our learning journey with

the task entitled "Short Time Reading or Long
Time Reading".
I am going to show you different reading
materials and your task is to tell whether the
reading materials requires short time reading Yes ma'am
or long time reading. You may choose short
time reading or long time reading for your
answer. Are you ready?

Let's begin. Here is the first reading

material.

A tv program schedule. Does it say a

short time reading or a long time reading?
Short Time Reading
Correct. It requires a short time reading
because we only need information of the
time and the title of the tv show we want.
How about the second one?

A newspaper headline. Does it take a

short time or long time reading? What do Short Time Reading
you think learners?
Good. It takes a short time reading a
newspaper headline because we want to
get a piece of information about the news
of the day.
Let's now see the last reading material.
How about a short story? What do you Long Time Reading
think? Is it a short time reading or a long
time reading? Your answer learners?
Very good. It takes a long time to read
the short story because we need to follow
the events leading to the end of the story.
Good job learners for your active
participation for your first task. Now,
based on the activity that we have
answered, different reading materials
takes different length of time depending
on your purpose and your purpose in
reading requires different reading styles in
order to get needed information.
C. Analysis
For our discussion proper, here is my
first question, “What are reading styles?”
No ma'am
Are you familiar?
Okay! Reading styles are different
strategies to get important details or
information from the material we are
reading.
Now, since reading is an important skills
for students must develop, it is also
important to know the different types of
reading style. In order for all of you to get
the design information from reading
material.
So learners, let’s find out all of this
different reading styles and identify how
this types help us in getting information Yes, ma’am
from the material we are reading. Are you
ready?
Okay, let’s go to our topic.
Two types of reading styles:
1.Skimming
It is a fast reading material to note key
points. It is used to quickly gather the
most important information in a reading
material. It is done at a speed 3-4 times
faster than normal reading and used when
we have lot of materials to read in a
limited time.
Example:
• Reading a newspaper headlines to
quickly get general news of the day.

• Reading magazines cover lines to

quickly discover which article you would
like to read in more details.

• Reading a business or travel

brochures to get quickly informed about
the business or the place.

Now, how do we skim? Do you have an

idea Ro'se?
Okay, this is the steps on how to skim:
• Read the title.

• Read the introduction.

• Read all the sub headings.

• Read the first and last sentence in

every paragraph.

• Go through the material looking for

clues as to content and information.
 • Always read the last paragraph.

2. Scanning
It is used to find a particular piece of
information without reading everything. It
involves moving your eyes quickly down
the page seeking for specific words and
phrases.
Examples:
• Looking for the name of the speakers
in the conference guide
• Looking for your time of departure in an
airplane schedule.

Next, steps of scanning.

• Remember the information you are
looking for.
• Don’t get destructed for the pieces of
information.
• Run your eyes over several lines at a
time.
• When you find the information you are
looking for, focus your eyes and attention
there then read the entire sentence.
 Now, let's move on to the similarities
and differences of scanning and
skimming.
Similarities
• Reading techniques that use rapid eye
movement and keywords.
• To read quickly than through the text
slightly different purpose, both are moving
the eyes quickly than the page, seeking
for the specific words and phrases.
Differences
• Skimming- reading to get general
overview of material.
• Scanning- reading to find specific
facts.
And those are the two types of reading
style.

D. Abstraction Yes, ma’am

Now, let us apply what we have learned

from our discussion, let’s now answer
another task entitled "Read and Style".

I will present different reading materials and

your task is to identify what is the appropriate
reading style to use. You will choose whether
it is scanning or skimming. Are you ready?
Let’s now start.
Here is the first one,
Weather report in local newspaper

Scanning
 Weather report are article in the newspaper
containing information about humidity,
atmospheric temperature, or places where
there is expected rain. Now, what appropriate
reading style we can use in this material?
Your answer learners?
Yes, correct, we use scanning, nice answer
learners.

Now, let’s have the second reading material,

how about,
An actor’s facebook page

Skimming
 Scanning/Skimming

Perhaps you are reading the information of

your favorite actors. So, what reading style do
you use in this material? Your answer
learners?
Great, the correct answer is Skimming.
Did you get all correct answer for this task?
Well if you got it all correct, good job, but if
you get one or zero score, do not be sad, it’s
just fine you are still doing good and all you
need is just more practice and more reading.

So, learners as a student which do you often

use in reading? We use scanning to find a
particular piece of information without
reading everything and skimming to quickly
gather the most important information in a
reading material.
Well, whatever is your answer I hope you
can now identify the differences of each
reading style, in order for you to know which
style will best help you in getting the
information from the different reading
materials according to your purpose.
E. Application
And we are done learning two different
learning styles and we are almost close to the
end of your learning journey. At this point, let
me now hear some of your thoughts from our
discussion. I will give you 10 seconds to think
of the questions and I will be glad to answer
those questions in a short time. For you to be
enlightened about our topic today, you may
now think questions and I will be back in a
short time.
And now I’m back, so let’s go see some of
the question from our virtual learners and let
see if I could answer some of those questions.
So let’s now have our first question from Lisa,
so the question is how do we know which
reading style to use in a material?
Oh, in order to identify the appropriate
reading style to use for a reading material,
you just ask yourself, what is my purpose in
me? And what information would I like to get.
Those are the questions that you need to ask
yourself and after answering those questions,
that is the time that you can now choose the
appropriate for the correct learning styles to
use in a material that we want to be.
Again, do not forget that it is the purpose that
determines the type of reading. So, let’s now
have the last question that I will be answering
from Jenny de Leon.

So the question is which among the two

learning styles is the most important?
Well. Actually, scanning and skimming are
both important because each of them
provides you different skills in reading. And
also it provides you different techniques in
order to get the information that you need
from different reading materials that you are
reading. So again, it depends on your
purpose. In short, all of the reading styles are
important. Now, as much as I want to answer
all of your questions, we only have limited
time but I hope you now have a better
understanding of the reading styles. Now, for
your final task, kindly answer your
assignment.
IV. ASSIGNMENT
Identify the appropriate learning style to
use for the following learning material given.
1. Computer manual
2. A short story by your favorite author
3. A poem
4. A blog
5. A reading text given by your teacher
