News website analysis checklist Comments & Suggestions

1. Design & Usability

▪ Responsive web design? Comments: Flexible, acceptable, both 2

versions of desktop and application are similar

No suggestions

▪ Grid-based layouts? Comments: Unequally among sections and

spaces for ads are too much

Suggestions: Spaces for ads should be reduced

and spaces for each section should be
distributed equally

▪ Emphasis on video and photography? Comment 1:

In desktop version: Sizes of photo/video

covers in each section in the home page are
not consistent, causing annoyance and a lack
of aesthetics for readers. Sizes of photo/video
covers in each article are consistent but too
large for an article

Suggestion 1: Photo/video covers should be

selected with a standard size.

Comment 2:

In application version: All photos and videos in

the home page or in the articles are in the
same size, which are easy to follow and creates
comfort and convenience for readers.

No suggestion
▪ Color schemes Comments: Both in desktop and application
versions:
o Text color: Headlines, article titles,
links, body text Dark text on a white background, which
enhances readability.
o Background color
Headers (black) and titles (light black) of the
page outside the content are emphasized in
darker colors.

The links are in light blue, which are easily

recognizable for users if they want to search
out for more information on that topic.

There are mixed colors in the background

(Dark blue in navigation menu, neon blue in
“Subscribe button” or section-separating lines
for subscribers only).

No suggestion.

▪ Banners Comments:

o Header? Or sidebar? This website uses header banners on all pages

(banners in the desktop version are in a pretty
o Size?
small size whereas in the application version
are pretty big).

Header banners are also fixed on the article

page in pretty large size.

However, in the application version, there are

no header banners.

Suggestion: Banners should be reduced in size

to avoid causing annoyance for readers.

▪ Navigation menu Comments: On desktop, users have many

choices when using the navigation menu on
o Header? Sidebar? Bottom?
the desktop. However, the hamburger
o Arrangement/ Organization navigation bar confuses the users with the
sidebar. On mobile/apps, it is the simplest
o Labeling? (Is it easy to understand?) form, saving space. Readers can easily follow
or gain information. From our perspective,
o Useful?
using the hamburger navigation menu saves
more time than the horizontal navigation.
Suggestions: Items should be sorted in a more
logical way.

▪ Tabbed content areas Comments: Easy to follow & Updated

regularly. However, in newsfeed, there are 2
o What are they used for?
categories: top stories and top picks that make
o In the sidebar? Or in the main content users confused with most popular articles.
area? Suggestions: Align titles to both the left and
right margins. The order should be rearranged
vertically.

▪ Newsfeed (easy to find & identify?) Comments: This website has numerous
different sections that are convenient and easy
for readers to follow.

Suggestions: It is necessary to add and unify

categories across mobile devices and desktop.

▪ Pictures Comments: There are lots of close-up photos.

o Choice Suggestions: When using portrait photos, the

authors should shoot at an angle and avoid
o Quality
shooting straight face.
o Editing

▪ Article pages Comment: Depending on the authors and the

purpose of each article, the content is divided
o Arrangement of elements (teaser,
into paragraphs with different subheading.
body text, pictures, boxes, etc.)
However, according to my observation, each
o Link texts (easy to understand) paragraph has only 1 to 2 sentences, which are
randomly broken according to the length of
o Structure (subheads, paragraphs) the paragraph, not according to the main idea.
Furthermore, the authors do not align text to
the left and right margins.

Suggestion: Authors should pay attention to

the main idea to separate paragraphs and align
text to the left and right margins. Each
paragraph should have a subheading for
readers to follow easily.

▪ Multimedia Comments: This website has a messy

arrangement, unreasonable order.
o Diversity: Audio? Video? Animations?
Other? Suggestions: Merge Videos and Gzero media
into the same multimedia section and
o Ease of use
rearrange the order of lists in multimedia in a
logical way like: Pictures, Videos, Animations,
or Graphics instead of big photos, photo
galleries or home in focus, etc.

2. Interactivity

▪ Social media (“share,” “like,” or Comment: We are allowed to share articles on

“recommend”) buttons social media such as Fcebook, twitter,
Whatsapp,...

We can see the headline and the featured

photo on social networking sites. When we
clicked on the link which was shared on
Facebook, the news immediately opened. We
think the function of sharing is very simple and
flexible to use.

we do not use these social networking sites

but we have set up the accounts of the social
networking site to test the sharing feature and
it gave good result

No suggestion

▪ Comment section Comment: Readers are not allowed to

comment on The Straits Times, but we can
comment on other social networking sites such
as Facebook and Youtube of The Straits Time.
We do not like this experience because if we
want to share opinions about the articles, we
must find these articles on Facebook or
Instagram to show it. We always meet
difficulties and feel annoyed.

We have commented on Facebook, YouTube,

Instagram of The Straits Time. Some comments
are impolite but the administrator still browses
the post and after 19 hours, my comments are
still not deleted.

Suggestion: The Straits Time should add

comments at the end of each article

▪ Mobile versions/ apps Comment: The Straits Time is available in the

app store and Google CHplay. This makes it
more convenient because we can read news
everywhere and everytime we want. However,
there are a lot of advertisements which cover
all our screens and this drives us crazy.

No suggestion

▪ Site search engine Comment: Site search engine was placed in a

small position at the top so it may be difficult
to find. We tried to search for different
keywords and it quickly got results. We are
extremely satisfied with search speed.

No suggestion

▪ Subscribe/unsubscribe to a mailing list (eg. Comment: Some breaking news requires

for newsletter) subscription to continue reading. However, to
our budgets as uni-students, $29,90/month is
out of the question.

No suggestion

▪ Membership (What privileges do members Comment: There are not any privileges when I
have over non-members?) am a member of The Straits Time

▪ Advertising Comment: These advertisements do not

attract viewers and make reader feel
uncomfortable so they may not come back to
read news on The Straits Time again

No suggestion

▪ Contact/ Feedback Comment: We have sent emails to The Straits

Time on 29/1/2021 but we have not received
any responses including automatic mails.

Through “ Contact Us”, it is pointed that users

can give comments and suggestions to The
Straits Time as well as ask questions but it does
not seem to be working well.
No suggestion

▪ Others (list all other interactive features Comment: We think there are some
available on your assigned news website interactive features available on The Straits
here, e.g. Games, Dating, Shopping, Time news. We are able to find a wide variety
Competitions, Virtual reality, etc.) of topics on The Straits Time so this can also
attract readers of different ages and
