Additional Materials Item Bank, page 3 first quarter, flashcards, charts, marbles,
straws, popsicle sticks, rubber bands, pebbles
IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preliminary Activity Drill
Have a drill on reading numbers from 0 to 100.
Review
Recall on visualizing and representing numbers from 0 to
100.

Motivation

Show marbles to the pupils.

Ask: What are these? (if only one- What is this?) What do
you call this/these here in our place? Have you seen
this? Do you have this? Have you experienced playing
this? What kind of game did you play using a marble?
Do you like playing it? (Infuse the KBI of being sports. Tell
something a marble and how it is played.)

B. Developmental Activity 1
Activity
Present the marbles again (it could be 11, 12 or up to 50
marbles). Using the marbles presented, lead and show the
pupils on how to count it by ones then, by tens and write how
many tens and ones are there. Introduce to them the place
value chart for tens and ones. Guide them where to write the
number for ones and for the tens. Give another examples.
Activity 2
Group the pupils into four. Give each group different sets of
object. Let each group count the objects by tens and by ones.
Have them write how many tens and how many ones are
there.

Group I Group II

(23 popsicle
(16 (pebbles)
sticks)

Tens ___ Ones ___ Tens ___ Ones___

Group III Group IV

(47 rubber
(31 straws)
bands)

Tens ___ Ones ___ Tens ___ Ones ___

(Set Standards for group activity first before doing the given
task. Presentation and reporting of each group’s work.)

Activity 3
Count the number of ones and tens of the objects in a
given set then, write your answer.
1. 4.

Tens ___ Ones ___ Tens ___ Ones ___

2. 5.

Tens ___ Ones ___

Tens ___ Ones ____

3.

Tens ____ Ones ____

C. Analysis
Ask: How did you find the activity? After counting the
objects by tens, how did you write it? After counting
the remaining objects by ones, how did you write it?
Were you able to count the number of objects in a
given set by ones and tens correctly and write its
corresponding numbers?
D. Abstraction Ask: How do you count the number of objects in a given set?
How do you write the number of objects for tens in the
place value chart? for ones?
(Lead and guide the pupils in making the generalization.)
In counting the number of objects in a given set is by
tens and by ones. Tens digit is written under the tens place
and the ones digit under the ones place in the place value
chart.
