DAM 13503 – BASIC ELECTRIC AND ELECTRONICS

TEST 1, Semester I, Session 2020/2021

Instructions: Answer all questions . Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Q1 (a) How many coulombs are represented by these amounts of electrons?

(i) 6.482  1017

(ii) 2.46  1019
(2 marks)

(b) A flashlight battery has a rating of 0.8 ampere-hours (Ah) and a lifetime of 10 hours.

(i) How much power can it give if its terminal voltage is 6 V?

(ii) How much energy is stored in the battery in kWh?

(5 marks)

(c) An electric stove with four burners and an oven is used in preparing a meal as
follows;

Burner 1: 20 minutes Burner 2: 40 minutes

Burner 3: 15 minutes Burner 4: 45 minutes
Oven: 30 minutes

The meals have to be prepared 2 times per day for month April and May.

If each burner is rated at 1.2 kW and the oven at 1.8 kW, and electricity costs will
follow the TNB tariff for residential unit as in Table 1, calculate the total cost of
electricity used in preparing the meal for April and May.
(8 marks)

Tariff A Domestic Unit Current Rate

(2018)
For the first 200 kWh (1-200 kWh) per month cent/kWh 21.80
For the next 100 kWh (201-300 kWh) per month cent/kWh 33.40
For the next 300 kWh (301-600 kWh) per month cent/kWh 51.60
For the next 300 kWh (601-900 kWh) per month cent/kWh 54.60
For the next kWh (901 kWh onwards) per month cent/kWh 57.10
The minimum monthly charge is RM3.00
