B. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
1. Rationale Cavite has a total land area of 142,706 ha, constituting 8.72% of the
total area of Region IV-A. The province has seven congressional
districts, seven cities, 16 municipalities, and 829 barangays. Of these,
seven municipalities (Tanza, Noveleta, Naic, Ternate, Maragondon and
Kawit), three specific areas (Rosario, Bacoor City and Cavite City) and
316 barangays are situated along the coast. The coastal area of Cavite is
approximately 93,679.38 ha with a shoreline length of 122.57 km.
One of the primary renewable sources of energy is the
generation of power from wind. According to the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in 2001, the Philippines
has a wind potential of 70 gigawatts which may contribute for the
Philippines to increase the RE-based power generation from its
2010 capacity of 5,438 megawatts to 15,304 megawatts by the
year 2030, targeting an additional RE capacity of 9,865
megawatts which has been a goal for the National Renewable
Energy Plan (NREP) to achieve.
Wind offers an enormous source of renewable energy.
This have been realized as a variable source of free energy for
hundreds of years. Wind or air in movement contains the kinetic
energy which is then converted by the wind turbine for us to have
mechanical power. This turbine is connected to a generator which
gives electricity. This concept has been a significant player as
means of producing renewable energy since 1980’s. Wind power
gives us wide areas for applications. It is evident because it can
provide up to 800MW of power (Scansen, 2012).
A horizontal axis wind turbine, like all forms of power-
generating technologies, is a device that converts one type of
energy into electrical energy: in this case, the kinetic energy of
the wind. The turbine does this by slowing down the stream of air
flowing past it and the resulting change in momentum is
converted to electrical output by a generator (Trewby 2014).
Horizontal axis wind turbines generate electrical power in
the same way as all other generation technologies but unlike
vertical axis wind turbine, this is more efficient when it comes to
different directions of windspeed . The only difference is in the
source of the mechanical power supplied to the electrical
generator: wind, rather than a diesel engine or steam turbine,
provides the energy. Blades capture energy in the wind and turn
the turbines. Control mechanisms point the blades into the wind
and, on large wind turbines, adjust the pitch of the blades as wind
speeds change. Typically, a gearbox connects the shaft from the
blades or rotor to the electrical generator. The electrical
generators used on wind turbines may either be induction
generators or synchronous generators (Doug Reinemann, Jenny
Heinzen, 2014)

blades, it will drive the entire propeller into rotation. The speed of
the fan will increase as change in wind pressure is acted upon the
propeller. The output will be directed to the gearbox. Then
through the generator, it converts mechanical energy into
electrical energy. The output electricity energy is alternating
current with low voltage. It still needs to go through a rectifier
and an inverter to access the power grid. The direction and speed
of wind are always changing. The wind vane can measure the
direction of wind and feedback to the controller to rotate the head
to face the wind. The blade or the rotor is the most important
component for the wind turbine.
Tapping to the potential of coastal areas of Cavite where we
have unlimited source of wind energy with exemplary
performance when it comes to wind speeds, it can be envisioned
that the unsolved problems on climate change due to non-
renewable sources of energy be solved progressively.

1.1. Statement of the The study generally focuses on the development of a wind
Problem energy conversion system by using horizontal axis wind turbine
that can harness wind energy on coastal areas in providing an
alternative to conventional energy sources.
Specifically, the study aims to:
1. design and assemble an energy generating device which
can harness wind energy and convert it into useful energy
by using wind turbine electricity generation system;
2. test and evaluate the technical performance of the system
in terms of the following.
a. output voltage with respect to the change in wind
pressure;
b. power output;
c. time required to charge a battery;
d. conversion efficiency; and
3. conduct a cost analysis of the system.

1.2. Significance The use of wind energy system that can harness wind energy by
using horizontal axis wind turbine is of critical and great help in
providing an alternative to usage of conventional energy sources.
Moreover, the developed wind energy conversion system for
electricity generation can be used by the different members of the
society.
Local Government Units. The project will help in
achieving the sustainable development goal of the government
which is to provide clean and renewable energy and as laid down

Power Stations. This proposes an idea that will reduce the
costly transport cost of electricity from far-away stations and
large power losses as it can be erected almost in every highway
with vehicles passing in it making the electricity generated be
easily used by the consumers.
1.3. Time and Place of The operation of the device was assessed through placing it on
the Study simulation of operation in coastal areas of Rosario, Cavite starting
on the approval date for prototyping until desirable results of
parameters are achieved.
1.4. Scope and The study focused only on the development and
Limitations designing of a wind energy harvesting system by horizontal axis
wind turbine which gathers wind energy from coastal areas to
provide alternative to conventional energy sources. This study
only evaluates the technical performance of the system in terms of
output voltage with respect to the change in wind pressure; power
output; time required to charge a battery; and its conversion
efficiency. The device will be tested to light up a single lighting
to provide light to sea shores at night time.

2. Expected Output This project will come up to a prototype of a developed horizontal

axis wind power generation system that is to be ideally implemented to
coastal areas of Cavite.

3. Expected The major parts of the wind energy conversion system are
Outcomes turbines and generator. The system is placed along the coastal
areas of Cavite. Once the presence of wind pressure started the
rotation of the propeller, there will be generation of the
mechanical to electrical output of energy. The output will be used
to charge the battery that will energized the single lighting as
indicator. The switching will be operated by the automatic setting
of switching the street light.
