Teaching Arts in the Elementary Grades

ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENTS
PRELIM

1. Define Arts in your own words.

For me Arts is define as any movement or product that is done by

individuals with an open or aesthetic and purposeful reason. It

conveys a thought, feeling, emotions and a perspective that is reflective

in its design and form as a part of culture. It can be in the form of

visual arts, performance arts, graphics, literary and even in cooking.

2. What is elementary art?

Elementary art is integrating art subject in the primary curriculum

that enhances the skills and interests of the elementary students when

it comes different forms of arts.

3. What is the importance of teaching arts in elementary grades?

The importance of teaching arts in the elementary grades is

that it stimulates the Multiple Intelligences of the elementary graders by
engaging into various art activities – which is an integral part of the
elementary curriculum.

Among the enumerated methods of teaching art, select at least two and
cite examples on how you are going to use/apply it to your students

First is Brainstorming I can use this method by divide the class into
groups and give each group a printed picture as a sample of some of the
renown paintings of the Filipino artists and let the groups exchange ideas
about what they observe and what element of arts are present in it. Second
is the Experimenting. I will assign my class to bring coloring materials
(paint, crayons, and/or oil pastel) but only those primary colors – blue, red
and yellow. And design an activity wherein they will experiment on their
own to mix the primary ones and have another

color using it.

5.Why art is beneficial in education?

Art is beneficial in education because its instruction helps

children with the development of motor skills, language skills,

social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness.

Moreover, art programs have the potential to help improve a

student's memory and concentration skills, develop decision-

making and critical thinking skills, enhance communication

and listening skills, but also encourage focus and discipline

and also help a student to improve self-esteem and social

skills.

6. What are the elements of arts? Why is value one of it?

The elements of arts are line, shape, texture, form, space, color and value.

Value that is pertain here as an element of art refers to the lightness and
darkness of a given color or hue of the art, it is included in order to
understand the scale or gradient of the visuals and create a focal point of
interest.
7. What are the principles of art? Expound what those things are in your
own understanding.

The 7 principles of art and design are balance, rhythm,

pattern, emphasis, contrast, unity and movement. Balance

refers to the visual weight of the elements in the composition.

Rhythm is implied through the repetition of elements of art, it

may not be in uniform manner but it is in organized way.

Emphasis is often achieved by contrast. It is the area of

composition where the viewer’s attention is caught because of

its dominant visuals. Contrast makes the elements stronger in

relation to each other. Unity or variety is the unified elements

fits together comfortably. Too much unity results to monotony

and too much variety creates chaos. That is why these two are

needed. Lastly, is movement. It is the result of using the

elements of art as such they move the viewer’s eye around and

within the image. It can be achieved by diagonal or curvy lines,

edges, and repetition. Example is the optical illusion art.

8. Among the enumerated elements of art, what is the most important
one? Why?

For me the most important element of art is LINE. Without line, shape
cannot be formed, strokes of the color cannot be visualized and the space
cannot be realized without the lines. Arts can be arts without color,
definite shape and the lightness and darkness of light. Even abstract arts
have lines that are irregulars and deep but it is still considered an art.

9. Why is color an important element of art?

Color is an important element of art because it adds more attractive

beauty, creates emotion and drama and meaning to the composition. Each
color represents symbol and meaning and the lightness and darkness of it
show how profound effect to the viewer.

10. For you, is there a demand for art teachers?

If I were to decide, yes, there is a demand for art

teachers in the Philippine educational system because

we really need teachers who are in this kind of

specialization. It must be studied and taught

separately in order to focus and students have more

interest in this creative subject.
