Assignment 1: CIE 401, Due on Wed.

09:00 hours

1. Determine the degree of static and kinematic indeterminacy and classify the following 11
structural elements: whether statically determinate or statically indeterminate; whether stable
or unstable; whether the stability or the instability is internal or external or both. Assume the
axial deformation is present. The dot in the structural elements denotes an internal hinge joint
connection.
2. A cable is suspended between two points, 75 m apart horizontally with its left end lower than
the right end by 10 m. The cable supports a uniformly distributed load of 5kN/m along the
horizontal span. Given the central sag is 7.5 m, determine
a) the position of the lowest point
b) the horizontal tension
c) the length of the cable; and
d) the cable tensions at the two ends.

3. Analyse the simply supported portal frame shown in the figure below. Sketch the axial force,
shear force and the bending moment diagrams. Also plot the probable shapes of the deflection
curve.
4. Analyse the three hinged pitched portal frame shown in the figure below and sketch the
bending moment, shear force and axial force diagrams. Also sketch the probable deflected
shape.

5. Analyse the two hinged portal frame shown in the figure below and and sketch the bending
moment, shear force and axial force diagrams. Also sketch the probable deflected shape.
6. Analyse the three hinged parabolic arch shown in the figure below. Determine the support
reactions, sketch the bending moment, shear force and axial force diagrams. Determine the
values of the bending moment, shear force and normal thrust at points A,B,C,D and E. Also
sketch the probable deflected shape.
