THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VOLCANOES AND VOLCANIC ERUPTION

I. Learning Competency
- Describe the different types of volcanoes and volcanic eruption
II. Background Information for Learners
A volcano is a rupture in the crust of a planetary-mass object, such as Earth, that allows hot lava,
volcanic ash, and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface. On Earth, volcanoes are
most often found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging, and most are found underwater.
Type of Volcanoes
1. Composite volcanoes are made of felsic to intermediate rock. The viscosity of the lava means
that eruptions at these volcanoes are often explosive. The viscous lava cannot travel far down the
sides of the volcano before it solidifies, which creates the steep slopes of a composite volcano.
Viscosity also causes some eruptions to explode as ash and small rocks. The volcano is
constructed layer by layer, as ash and lava solidify, one upon the other. The result is the classic
cone shape of composite volcanoes.
2. Shield volcanoes get their name from their shape. Although shield volcanoes are not steep, they
may be very large. Shield volcanoes are common at spreading centers or intraplate hot spots. The
lava that creates shield volcanoes is fluid and flows easily. The spreading lava creates the shield
shape. Shield volcanoes are built by many layers over time and the layers are usually of very
similar composition. The low viscosity also means that shield eruptions are non-explosive.
3. Cinder cones are the most common type of volcano. A cinder cone has a cone shape, but is much
smaller than a composite volcano. Cinder cones grow rapidly, usually from a single eruption
cycle. Cinder cones are composed of small fragments of rock, such as pumice, piled on top of one
another. The rock shoots up in the air and doesn’t fall far from the vent. The exact composition of
a cinder cone depends on the composition of the lava ejected from the volcano. Cinder cones
usually have a crater at the summit.

Type of Volcanic Eruptions

Volcanoes erupt differently. They are generally classified as wet or dry depending on the
magma’s water content. Volcanoes are described according to the style of eruptions as follows:
1. Phreatic or hydrothermal – stream-driven eruption as the hot rocks come in contact with water. It
is short-lived, characterized by ash columns but may be an onset of a larger eruption.
2. Phreatomagmatic – a violent eruption due to the contact between water and magma. As a result, a
large column of very fine ash and high-speed and sideway emission of pyroclastics called base
surges are observed.
3. Strombolian – a periodic weak to violent eruption characterized by fountain lava.
4. Vulcanian – characterized by tall eruption columns that reach up to 20km high with pyroclastic
flow and ashfall tephra.
5. Plinian – excessively explosive type of eruption of gas and pyroclatics.
