INTRODUCTION

Bags plays a very important role in our daily lives whether it is a school bag from
our school-days or a shopping bag for shopping, bags are crucial in one's lives. With the
fast pace of modern life, bags still maintains a key position in our lives and have become
even more important. Because of its purpose, bags have become one of the necessities of
the people around the world.

A bag is a kind of soft container that can be used to hold or carry things. It may be
made from cloth, leather, plastic, or paper. Many bags are disposable but some are made
durable to be use for a long time.

In this study, left-over fabrics is used as a major material in making the product
which was named Scrap Bag. The study wants to know the acceptability and satisfaction
level of the product.

Background of the Study

Fabrics are the result and product of using huge amount of water, chemical,
technology, and people’s labour. Fifteen to twenty percent (15%- 20%) of it used to
make garments and ends up being discarded or thrown away. When the tailors decided to
make new apparels, fabric is cut to be sewed to make new garments, there is bound to be
wastage. The waste pieces of fabrics and thread are usually discarded making it one of
the major solid work According to the study of Environment Protection Agency, textile
of fabrics is accounted for some 3.9 million tons of solid wastes. Since these fabrics
aren’t biodegradable it is hard to dispose it. Improper disposal of these kinds of solid
wastes can lead to flooding since it can block the sewage system.

According to Madsen (2007) the accelerated pace of clothing consumption has led to
a dramatic increase in the amount of textiles, reusing and recycling them would be more
eco-friendly. That is why the researchers decided to conduct this study using “retaso” or
scrap cloth in making bags, specifically string bags which is popular in teens nowadays.

Drawstring bag or sometimes called as muslim bag is one of the commonly use bags
nowadays - specially here in the Philippines. It has been use for centuries. The first
drawstring bag was an ancient cloth or leather pouch that usually used before by men or
women to carry money, coins, jewelries or keys. These drawstring bag had two fold
purpose, aside from being a fashion accessory, it can be used to hold heavy things. The
bag is closed by pulling the cord to one side of the top or mouth so that the materials,
gathers to closed position at the side from which the cord is pulled. As such the cord pro-
trudes from one side and the bag tends to maintain an oblique position when hung from
one object or carried by hand. The researchers wanted use ‘’retaso’’ or scrap cloth as a
materials in making our string bags because the study wants to show to other people the
value of scrap clothes. Therefore, the researchers wanted to contribute to the
environment by creating a product that will be beneficial, innovative, and eco-friendly.

Significance of the Study

Bags have become necessity to the people of the modern days. They use it to carry
their personal belongings. The study entitled “Evaluation Of The Grade 12 Senior High
School Students With Regards To The Satisfaction And Acceptability Level Of The
Innovated Scrap Bag” aims to make use of excess or left over clothes and fabrics from
various tailoring shops in Puerto Princesa City. This study will benefit the government
and the environment because it will lessen the scrap fabric waste and it will also serves
as an alternative of single-use plastic bags which adheres to the House bill no. 8692 or
also known as “The banning of single-use plastic bags”

Scope and Delimitation

The study will focus on the making of the bag that is made up of left over fabrics.
This study will consist of 105 respondents; fifteen (15) representatives in every track and
strand of Grade 12 Senior High School of Palawan National School. The study is
conducted during the school year 2019 – 2020.
CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Since the main topic in the study is about upcycling scrap or left-over fabrics and
turning it to a bag that is eco-friendly. It is important to know the various problems
caused by scrap fabrics from the textile industry. The main environmental problems
caused by the textile industry includes water pollution, air pollution and solid waste
pollution.

As stated by Grewal (2004), Textile industry is one of the most important

consumer goods industry. However, the said industry is also accused of being one of the
most polluting industries.

According to (Fisher 2008), Clothing or textiles are often discarded because it is

worn out. However, this is only one of many reasons for disposal. Clothing are also
discarded because they become unfashionable; they no longer fit, they fit but do not look
or feel good; or a change in life style also resort to disposing cloths.

In accordance, Zurga, Hladnik and Tavcer (2015) stated that it is very important
to know the textile’s life cycle to create awareness among the consumers because every
stage of life-cycle contributes toward environmental pollutions.

According to Leblanc (2019), textile recycling is the process by which old

clothing and other textiles are recovered for reuse or material recovery. He also added
that recycling textiles is increasingly being recognized because it is beneficial and
environmental sound. Some of its benefits include pollution avoidance, reduced
consumption of energy and water, and decreases landfill requirements.

Moreover, Fletcher et al (2008) stated that recycling is a transition of used things

into something more socially acceptable and less energy intensive.

In addition, Morley (2009) also stated that recycling is the use of material
properties that can prolong product usage and material life cycles. So instead of
disposing scrap or remnants of fabrics, reusing and recycling them would be more eco-
friendly. One of the ways that we can recycle scrap fabrics is turning it to a bag.

In accordance to Guner and Yucel (2005) study, textile and apparel products are
among the basic necessities of people and it can negatively affect the environment as
well as humans. They emphasized that aiming for a healthy final product would not be
sufficient and that environmentally friendly practices would have to be used in the
production process as well.

Therefore, it is very important for people to know how to make a use out of scrap
fabrics and this study will help to give them ideas and knowledge about upcycling scrap
fabrics. Not only it will benefit them but also the environment and the society as a whole.

Discussion, Conclusion and Recommendation

Discussion

This study assesses and evaluates all the Grade 12 students of Palawan National
School (PNS). It aims to know what make use of excess or left-over clothes and fabrics
from various tailoring shops in Puerto Princesa City. Also, this study aims to figure out
the kind of bags the respondents prefer and the level of satisfaction and acceptability of
every student regarding the innovated products and how this product gives an impact to
the community.

Base on the data gathered, it interprets that most of the Grade 12 senior high school
students of Palawan National School (PNS) prefers Tote Bag because it got 45 out of 105
score from the respondents. Secondly, the Grade 12 Senior High School of Palawan
National School is extremely satisfied in the quality, design and durability of the scrap
bag made up of left-over fabrics since it got a mean of 4.27, 4.09, and 4.01 respectively.
The respondents are also very satisfied when it comes to the price of the said product
since it got a mean of 3.14. Lastly, the innovated bag is much more acceptable to the
respondents when it comes to quality, design, durability and price since it got a mean
score of 90.29, 93.14, 90.33, and 91.76 respectively compared to the normal bags in the
market that has a mean of 89.14, 88.95, 89.33, and 89.52 respectively.

Conclusion

The purpose of this study is to know the bags that the grade 12 Senior High School
of Palawan National School prefer, the satisfaction and acceptability level of the
respondents towards the Innovated Bag made up of left-over fabrics.

Based on the findings shown in table 1, The researchers therefore conclude that the
Tote bag is the most preferred bag of the grade 12 senior high school students of Palawan
National School among all of the other kinds of bags in the option

Another major findings of this study was the level of satisfaction of the respondents
when it comes to the price of the innovated bag. As we saw in table 2, the price has a
mean of 3.14, which is the lowest mean score in the result. Therefore, we conclude that
most of the grade 12 senior high school students are not really that satisfied when it
comes to the price of the innovated bag compared to their satisfaction in quality, design
and durability.

Lastly, according to the findings shown on table 3, We therefore conclude that the
Grade 12 Senior High School students of Palawan National School preferred Innovative
Scrap bags because of its price, durability, quality and design rather than bags that are
usually sold in the market as indicated to the results in the survey that we conducted in
Grade 12 ABM, ARTS AND DESIGN, GAS, HUMSS, STEM, SPORTS TRACK and
TVL students in Palawan National School.

Recommendation

The Innovative bag were assessed by the respondents thoroughly because of that, the
following recommendations were made:

1. The researchers recommend that the government should support and invest more in
Innovative products such as this because it has a great contribution in decreasing the
number of wastes in the surroundings.

2. The researchers recommend that the entrepreneurs should engage in practice of

using scrap materials such as scrap fabrics as an alternative material to help lessen
the waste in the community.

3. The researchers recommends to the readers of this study to patronize products that
are made up of scrap or left-over materials since it really helps to lessen the scrap
materials in the environment and it can also match the quality, design, durability and
price of products that usually being sold in the market.

4. Lastly, the researchers recommend that the future researchers should also conduct
studies related to this in order to look for more uses of scrap materials specially left-
over fabrics. This study will be beneficial to them in gaining new knowledge and
idea and also a foundation of creating a product or solution to the society’s
increasing waste.
