Subject: Request for the exams to be held in online mode

Despite the ongoing pandemic and alarming number of covid cases

reported daily, 5th and 7th Semester students of Dayananda Sagara
College Of Engineering, Bengaluru, received circulars requesting students
to appear for offline exams. This has resulted in stressful situations for
parents, students, and also might have a severe impact on the lives of
many students.

On the other hand, syllabus has not yet been completed by many
faculties and most of them are merely rushing to complete the syllabus.
This, naturally, makes us worried and concerned for our safety among
other issues such as incomplete syllabus, and lack of preparation.
The simple question of the students is “If teaching was done online, then
why are exams being held offline?”
And the simple question of parents is “WITHOUT THE CONSENT AND
THE PERMISSION OF PARENTS ON WHAT BASIS HAVE THEY
TAKEN DECISION FOR OFFLINE EXAM?”

The battle of Corona is taking a toll on many students. The situation isn’t
getting better in next quarter of 2021, and there are chances, according to
the experts, that India will have to face second wave of coronavirus.
As per Bangalore surveillance health audit there will be a spike in the
number of cases due to current weather condition, which will likely
worsen the situation.

No matter how many precautionary measures are taken, being in the same
room is going to affect our health and it means putting our life in danger.
Will the college take responsibility for this? Will the college guarantee the
safety and healthcare of students from COVID? For people coming from
outside as well as people staying here, they have to take a risk that they
could potentially infect their family members. We don’t want to risk our lives
for the sake of offline exams instead online exams will be much better,
efficient, and safe.

Our College is planning to call 5th and 7th semester students of all
branches which will makeup around 5,000-6000 students. Other colleges
including IIT’S and NIT’S and many other private colleges too have
already finished 5th Sem exams in online mode and some are going to
finish it by the end of December.
Why is our college still lagging to finish online exam as compared to other
engineering colleges who(in interest of students and taking into account
the current pandemic situation )have already completed online exam for
5th and 7th Semester ? Without any valid reasons, dates are being
pushed to Jan-2021 instead of being completed by Dec-2020. Why are
the dates for exams being extended ? This is going to result in the
extension of the next semester also and is severely going to hamper
the internship period in June when students are required to do an
Internship compulsorily.

However like other engineering colleges, DSCE should complete online

exam for 5th and 7th sem. Currently with online teaching the status of
syllabus completion is only to the tune of 50% and we have another 15
days to go.

First of all, teaching has been very inefficient through online classes. We
haven’t understood the subjects well and are not confident to write exams
in offline mode. Also, our syllabus isn’t complete yet. And our exams start
from 21st January which give us exactly 10-15 days to find a place, study
the whole syllabus – 4 months of syllabus. Everything is crammed up
within a very short period of time.

Many of the Final Year Students have got internship offers from many
companies , and most of the internships will start from either 1st or 2nd
week of January but due to examination they are making a delay in the
starting date of internship so this is not good for the students to do
internship because they are delaying it by a month. Therefore we request
the college to conduct online exam for 5th and 7th Sems , they can do their
internships at the right time and it’ll not get delayed.

As there are limited occupancy in college hostels for students many

students reside in nearby PGs and Apartments. So they don't have proper
arrangements of food they have to order or arrange for a cook if they
have kitchens in which the risk of Covid-19 will increase.

1. Many students need to travel from far places to write their exams
(different states, countries) , travelling is the major cause of
contamination due to the virus.
2. Travelling from other countries is very risky & also expensive,
transportation cost of at least 10K -20K. Right now, there are many
parents who can’t afford these expenses. International Flights are yet to
start, and NRI students won’t be able to come to college and no one
wants to risk our lives for the sake of exams.
3. Hostel students will be facing many problems .

● The students living in hostels are bound to share the common

washroom which highly increses the chances of contamination.
● Food at the hostel is provided in mess (Dining Hall), where 6 people
need to sit in one table (violation of social distancing)
● Plates and spoons in the hostel are not washed properly.

Every parent is spending day and night to keep their children protected
from the pandemic. Sending them to the hotspots where their children can
get Corona is not something they are willing to do. They also believe that,
once the offline classes are commenced, the students are bound to mingle
with each other. If one student has Corona (symptomatic/asymptomatic),
the mingling and hanging out is going to cause a domino effect putting the
lives of thousands in danger. No matter how many precautionary steps the
college or the students take, being in a foreign place is still risky.

If the exams get over as per earlier scheduled time-table, the rest of the
semesters i.e. the even sem will start off as per the original dates and will
go smoothly and possibly end in May. If that happens, then everything will
fall back into place and we can follow regular classes like how it was
before corona. Thus we request you not to extend the dates unnecessarily
and conduct this semester’s exams in online mode itself as the decision to
conduct offline SEE is simply a means to spoil this semester and the
following semester too.

It is our humble and sincere request to everyone that this current odd
semester exams must happen ONLINE because of the following points
mentioned above! So please make it ONLINE and let us start the next
even semester OFFLINE so that we will try and make arrangements to
come to college for the next upcoming even semester!

Thank You.

Yours sincerely,
DSCE STUDENTS
