PRINCIPLES OF BIM - DIBAM MSC PROGRAMME

Written Assignment Brief 2020/21

Written Assignment Brief (85% of Module mark)

You are a consultant engineer with TB Solutions Ltd (TBS). TBS is a large firm of consultants (similar to ARUP –
see www.arup.com) who are often asked to give an opinion on business solutions in general areas of the built
environment.

You have been asked by an English Premier League football club, Diamond Castle FC (DCFC), to give an
opinion on the advantages of using modern BIM techniques throughout the various development phases for their
new stadium from inception through to post occupancy. In particular, your clients wish to know if it is normal,
safe and secure to have no traditional plans as a back-up system.

The new stadium is located close to a business park, which has recently been developed on the outskirts of a
small town just outside the London ring road, the M25. The only unusual aspect in relation to this development is
a large decorative arch, which will rise high above the closing roof. The initial ideas for the stadium have been
compared by many in concept to Wembley Stadium London – this may therefore be a useful comparable for
professional purposes.

DCFC are keen to benefit from modern digital development systems and tools that they have been told will help
create a more cost effective long-term environment for fans and staff. They also wish the new premises to be
more environmentally friendly.

You have been asked to give an opinion in report form (but fully referenced) on the advantages and
disadvantages of adopting BIM in the development. Whilst your report should deal with the design and
construction phases, DCFC are particularly keen to establish the long-term value of the BIM model in the
management of the stadium as an asset and in its operation as a facility.

You should make such other assumptions as are necessary to effectively address the brief. You are limited to
2000 words and the work should be fully referenced. See Moodle for deadline and submission details.
