Recipe for Pearl

Serves: Pearl Dwellers
Ingredients: Family, friends and all our favorite people combined to swim, chat, eat, drink, float and
stargaze in the heart of Leon.
Method: Gather family and friends to celebrate the best three months of each year, commonly referred
to as summer. They must be fun, helpful, strong, and able to follow directions, well mannered self
starters, who, much like their hosts, believe that summer at Pearl is the most magical time of the year.
Carefully fill a beach bag with essential items for fun in the sun. Lip gloss, lots of kissing going on,
gently coat and reapply to assure pucker potential. Sun glasses, keep them handy so you can whisk them
out, you won't want to miss a thing. Bug spray, enough said! Koozie cups, keep all beverages
temperature controlled.
Fold in plenty of fluffy beach towels. Toss in a Frisbee, swimsuit and cover up. Sunscreen is an
essential. You may choose to slather it, spray it, dribble it, or rub it in if you want to reach the golden
brown stage of perfection. Apply a dollop to all exposed skin so it is adequately coated to maintain
exterior moisture.
Every great chef wears a proper hat; be sure yours protects from sun glare, dehydrating breezes, and
impolite low flying eagles.
And let's not forget refreshments. A Very large cooler, chocked full, is preferable for lazy days in the
sun. You just never know who may drop in and want to share your beach umbrella. Tasty concoctions to
offer your guests will make you the most popular family on Pearl. Delicious beverages, stimulating and
flavorful will enhance your lakeside experience. Rapidly chilled and served in frosty mugs might be
freshly squeezed lemonade, farm fresh buttermilk, or long necked Coronas garnished with a slice of lime.
You won't ruffle any feathers if you have a variety of brews, Blue Moon, Fat Tire, Miller Lite, Point,
Summer Shanty, or perhaps a local micro brewery offering. There can never be too many choices or too
much ice. Just fill the largest cooler to accommodate guests' extraordinary thirst.
And who wouldn't enjoy a crisp green salad, southern fried chicken, smooth yogurt, an Italian sub, P B
and J, or an Oscar Mayer hot dog? A double batch of frosted chocolate brownies fresh from the oven, a
few grapes, or maybe slices of juicy, sweet watermelon may round out the refreshment selections.
Just be sure to include plenty of napkins, a bag of Spicy Doritos, and a bottle opener to complete the
picture.
Every family has their own secret ingredient, their... can't be at Pearl without it... special item. I guess
it is not much of a secret that the Beese-Williams family secret item is fairly compact, easy to carry and
very simple to share. To apply, just shake, apply liberally, and hope that a cool dip in the lake will remove
all evidence of Exotic Glitter, neon colors preferred.
Naturally we cross our fingers and hope for warm weather, plenty of sunshine and gentle breezes that
will reduce the heat and not drain our energy. After basking in the sun to test for doneness at the end of
the day's activities we recommend inserting a toothpick into the center of an olive. If it comes out clean it
is a positive indication of a perfect Pearl Lake day.
This recipe would not be complete without a liberal inclusion of laughter, mischief, secrets, favorite
family stories, outrageous family jokes, and warm wooly memories that lift our spirits and make it simple
to recall loved ones who are no longer with us. We are reminded that love is the most important
ingredient in all of our lives.
You, no doubt, have similar recipes in your bag of tricks for entertaining at Pearl Lake. We realize that
owning a place on the lake requires countless hours of raking and planting, trimming and pruning, pier
placing and sauna wood sawing, but when all is said and done, it is the partying that we all appreciate the
very most. So, the Beeses wish you all a most wonderful summer of relaxing and sharing all the
marvelous treats that this recipe entails. No one deserves these rewards more than you. After all, you
selected Pearl Lake as your very own location for rest and relaxation. Cook up a delightful summer of
fun!!!

Clean Boats Clean Waters

CBCW is a group of volunteers, both from Pearl Lake and students from UW-Stevens Point, who are
trying to educate people on the prevention of spreading invasive aquatic species which endanger our lakes.
When inspectors are at the landing, there is a standard watercraft inspection report with standard questions
to be asked. At 10:45 AM on September 1, 2013, a volunteer inspector from UW-Stevens Point stopped
and inspected a boat that was preparing to enter Pearl Lake. A family of 3 was launching a boat. When
they were asked if the boat had been on any other body of water during the past 5 days, they said yes, it
had been on Green Lake. They said they were aware of the laws about preventing the transport of aquatic
plants and visually inspected and removed any plants. The inspector simply squatted down and saw
approximately 18 plants, one of which was hanging on the boat propeller. The inspector asked the family
to help remove the plants, some of which had zebra mussel on them. When the owner was asked to start
his engine for 2-3 seconds to blow out anything that may have been in his water pump, this is when
problems arose. The man refused. What we know is the wife has family on Pearl Lake. They live near
Green Lake and the man works at Mercury Marine. They still launched their boat, knowing it could infect
our lake.
If people from Pearl Lake don’t care enough about the lake to keep it clean, how do we expect non-
property owners to care what happens on Pearl? If you think we spend a lot of money on milfoil, wait
until we have to try to clean up zebra mussel, which currently does not have anything that will eradicate it.
If you know who this family is, we would be interested in having a discussion with them. It takes every
property owner and lake user to keep our lake what it is today. Please don’t endanger what we have.

DNR burning permits are required in Waushara County

Now that all that snow has melted and yard clean-up has begun, remember, Burning Permits are
required from January 1 until May 31, unless the ground is completely snow covered. The permit is good
for piled brush/leaves, burn barrels and broadcast burning.
Burning hours are from 6 pm. to midnight, because this is when temperatures drop, winds usually
calm down and the relative humidity rises. This is also when most volunteer fire fighters should be home
from work facilitating a greater response should your fire become a wildfire. This is the safest time of the
day to burn.
People who burn during the day are breaking the law and can be fined up to $175.30. Anyone
allowing their fire to escape to become a wildfire is responsible for all the suppression costs and liable for
any damages their fire causes.
When you want to burn you will have to call the Burning Permit Hotline at 888-947-2876 or check the
DNR website at www.dnr.wi.gov, search forest fire and check “burning permit restrictions” after 11am on
the day you want to burn. It is your responsibility to know the burning laws that apply at your location.
Contact the DNR call center 888-936-7463 if you have additional questions about burning or the
alternatives to burning.
Waushara County Sheriff’s Office Note for Pearl Lake News
It is that time of year again. The long, long winter looks to
have given up. At the sheriff’s office we are switching gears to
go from winter roads and crashes to our summer activities.
This includes getting our Water Patrol in place. We have a few
deputies that have been trained in Water Patrol procedures with
the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. We have a
boat that we use to patrol the lakes in Waushara County. We
purchased this boat from the Town of Springwater when they
decide to get out of the water patrol business. There are a few
townships that have their own Water Patrols. In those towns
we will not deploy our people. One of the Lake Associations
did donate an underwater sonar locator device for our boat.
This piece of equipment has been a great asset for our
department. Under state law the sheriff’s office is responsible for all enforcement and requests for calls on
lakes and rivers in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources can and does provide
assistance to the Sheriff’s Office. Under this partnership the DNR provides a reimbursement program to
our department for deputy time and depreciation on the equipment. Under Sheriff Dave Peterson we
started the Water Patrol. We were having a hard time dealing with boating complaints and of Jet Ski
problems when the only thing we could do was to stand on shore. The boat allows us to be on the water
and deal with problems. Since we started the water patrols the number of lake complaints has gone down.
Now when we get a lake complaint we put the word out the Water Patrol members to watch for future
patrols. If the complaint is ongoing and the boat is out we will try to get to that lake and see what we can
do. Our deputies are looking for speed violations and how close water craft get to other people and boats.
The Jet Skis seem to generate our most complaints. They will also check for Personal Flotation Devices
and DNR registration. Most of violations are handled with warnings with citations issued for serious
violations.
Studies done the by the University of Wisconsin Extension Office state that during the summer
months the population of Waushara County goes up to almost 100,000 people. Most of this summer
increase is around the many lakes we have. This puts pressure on all of the lakes. This is when we get
conflicts and people are put in danger by the actions of others. Our presence on the lakes makes it
enjoyable for all users. The Waushara County Sheriff’s Office hopes you have a safe and fun summer on
Pearl Lake.
Sheriff Jeffrey Nett 04-14-14
***** An Invitation *****
“There was a great deal of interest shown by Pearl Lake residents during the construction of our
Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) home. If you would like to see how "homey" a concrete home can look,
we are having an open house at W4596 South Pearl Lake Rd. on Saturday May 24th, from 11:00 AM to
2:00 PM. For those of you who stopped in many times to view the progress, please join us to see and
enjoy the finished product." Roger and Donna Volden

For Your Safety

Summer will be here eventually and with the season comes more lake road traffic. When walking the road
around the lake or any road with out a pedestrian walkway the safest place to walk is on the left hand side
of the roadway facing traffic. This way you can see oncoming cars and will be able to determine if the
driver sees you by his actions. Have a safe walk/run/jog on the nearly 3 mile trip around our beautiful
lake.

There was some talk of a Lake Wide Rummage Sale this summer, as of this printing, details and
interest have yet to be worked out. If you are interested in taking part please check the bulletin boards or
the web site at www.mypearllake.com
