3.1.1) Relative Formula Mass

Relative Formula Mass

The relative atomic mass of an element is the mass of an individual element of

an element. This is given the symbol of A r. On the periodic table the relative
atomic mass is the top number. For Iodine (left) the Ar would be the number
127.

The relative formula mass of a compound is all the A r for each element in that
compound just added together. It’s given the symbol Mr.

Work out the Mr for the compound V2O5.

Vanadium has an Ar of 51 and Oxygen has an Ar of 16.

(51×2) + (16×5)
=182

Calculating Percentage Mass

The percentage mass of an element in a compound is the way of saying what proportion
of the mass of the compound is due to each element.

Ar × Number of that Elements∈the Compound

Percentage Mass= ×100
M r of the Compound

Calculate of Percentage Mass of Aluminium in Al2O3.

Ar of Al = 27 and Ar of O = 16

27 × 2
¿ × 100
( 27× 2 ) + ( 16 ×3 )

54
¿ ×100
102

¿ 53 %

Compound BaSX4 has a Mr of 233. And element ‘x’ has a percentage mass in the
element of 27.5% in that compound. Work out what element the letter ‘X’ resembles.

Ar × Number of that Element ∈theCompound

Percentage Mass= × 100
M r of Compound

M r × Percentage
Ar =
100× Number of that Element ∈the Compound

233× 27.5
¿
100 × 4

¿ 16.02(Rounder ¿16)

∴ element ❑' x ' is oxygen .
