“Topic:” Mindful living”: meaning , recognise

that everybody is different

Objectives: Review parts of the body, learn

to describe and express conditions, give
and ask for suggestions

1. READING
Read the three (3) texts from a wiki. Match
the questions with the correct text.

A. What is body image?

It is the perception, knowledge and feeling of

each person regarding their own body. Body

image is the representation of the body that each

person builds in their mind (Raich, 2000) and the

experience they have of their own body (Guimón,

1999). Henri Wallon defines as the result of the

relationship between individual and environment.

It is important to differentiate physical

appearance from body image, since people with

a physical appearance that is far from beauty

canons may feel good about their body image,

just as people who are socially evaluated as

beautiful may not feel that way. Body image is a

subjective construct.

Which comprises?

Body image is made up of different variables

(Cash and Pruzinsky, 1990; Thompson, 1990):

Perceptual aspects: the way in which the size,

weight and shape of the body are perceived.

Alterations in perception can lead to

1
overestimations, that an increased body image

reaches us, or underestimates, that the image

that reaches us is diminished.

Cognitive-affective aspects: attitudes, feelings,

thoughts, evaluations that the body awakens, its

size, its weight, its shape or some parts of it.

From an emotional point of view, body image

incorporates experiences of pleasure,

displacement, satisfaction, disgust, anger,

helplessness, etc.

Behavioral aspects: behaviors that are derived

from the perception and feelings associated with

the body. It can be your display, avoidance,

checking, rituals, camouflage, etc.

The experience of one's own body is related to

the image of oneself as a whole, with the

personality and psychological well-being

(Guimón, 1999). Thus Rosen (1995), points out

that body image is the way in which one

perceives, imagines, feels and acts with respect

to his own body.

B. Why is self-esteem important?

Why is self-esteem important?

Why is self-esteem so important? Because it

allows you to have more emotional stability: by

having a good opinion of yourself, you will not

need the approval of others and you will avoid

negative thoughts such as "what will people think

of me"

C. How does the media affect people

negatively?

Today our society is influenced by the constant

2
bombardment of information through different

media. This modifies our way of life, our

customs, the consumption of some products or

others, public opinion ... The information that

reaches us about different social, political or

economic events can make people change our

way of thinking about reality that surrounds us.

The media allow us to be informed, to know what

is happening in different parts of the world, to

show solidarity with those who have a bad time,

to reconnect with our origins, to know our history,

etc.

For information to be truthful, it must be given

objectively, and unfortunately it usually depends

on the eyes with which it is looked at. On other

occasions, due to economic or political interests,

it becomes purely manipulation, this is a problem

that we must face since knowing how to

differentiate information from manipulation is an

arduous task for everyone. It is necessary to

have very clear ideas and to contrast information

to know the reality of things, but most of the time

we do not do it, indeed, we swallow everything

they tell us, taking for granted what many times

is not, and even putting in doubt the very

certainty of the facts, just because it has been in

the media.

As an example of the aforementioned, I refer to

Jordi Évole's program, “Operación Palace”. How

many people believed that what they were

hearing was true? Here you have the link to

"Operation Palace" by Jordi Évole, and the link to

3
his explanation. I think it is a good example to

reflect on what we see or hear, what we believe

in ourselves and what we verify.

1° In our lives, we all interact with different kinds of media which provide information and messages that
influence our perception of reality. This influence can turn negative if we cannot process the messages in a
critical and healthy way. First of all, if we believe in the ideal of a ‘perfect body’ that the media promotes, we will
be frustrated at not being beautiful enough. This can create a negative body image. Secondly, if we let the
media tell us how to be happy and successful, we will spend a lot of time, money and energy going after the
wrong ideals and values.

2° The picture we create in our mind of how we look is called body image. But this perception is not just an
image or an idea. It is a feeling that influences our personality and our behaviour. If you have a positive body
image, you will feel good about who you are, not only about how you look. If you are unhappy with your body
image, this can affect your self-esteem and créate negative feelings. If those feelings continue, they can turn
into serious illnesses like eating disorders or depression.

3° The value you attribute to yourself is your selfesteem. It is important because it is something that influences
your personality and your emotions. If you have high self-esteem, you will believe in yourself and be confident
in all areas of your life. On the contrary, if you have low self-esteem, you may be unhappy, anxious or
extremely self-conscious.

2. MATCH THE CONDITIONS WITH THE RESULTS.

Read the advertisement for online psychological support.

1. you will be frustrated. a. If you cannot process media messages critically,

2. their influence can turn negative X b. If you have high self-esteem,
3. you will feel good about who you are, and c. if you have a positive body image,
not only about how you look. B
4. you will believe in yourself and you will be d. If you believe in the ideal of a perfect body that
confident the media promotes,

athlete. Complete the text with the words: hurt -

Mariana Pajón is an inspiration to me and she has

helped me (a) _believe____________ in myself

because success is about your mental attitude.

Mariana had an accident in her last competition. She

fell and (b)__ made an injury to___ her arm, but she

(c)_recovered__ quickly because she (d)he got over

it with _ the support of her doctors and all her family.

In her last competition, the other competitors were

bigger and stronger than her, but this did not make

her anxious. Her self-esteem is very high because

she is confident in herself. I believe she always

thought she could win and she did.

My personal motto is inspired by Mariana:

“If you have a positive mental attitude, you will

(e)_overcome__ all obstacles. If you fall, stand up

and keep going. Don’t give up!”
