Defining Social Science, Natural Science, and Humanities
Social science is the branch of science devoted to the study of societies and
the relationships among individuals within those societies. The term was formerly used to refer
to the field of sociology, the original "science of society", established in the 19th century. In
addition to sociology, it now encompasses a wide array of academic disciplines,
including anthropology, archaeology, economics, human geography, linguistics, management
science, media studies, musicology, political science, psychology, welfare and nursing
studies and social history.
The history of the social sciences begins in the Age of Enlightenment after 1650, which saw a
revolution within natural philosophy, changing the basic framework by which individuals
understood what was "scientific". Social sciences came forth from the moral philosophy of the
time and were influenced by the Age of Revolutions, such as the Industrial Revolution and
the French Revolution. The social sciences developed from
the sciences (experimental and applied), or the systematic knowledge-bases or prescriptive
practices, relating to the social improvement of a group of interacting entities.
Natural science is a branch of science concerned with the description, prediction, and
understanding of natural phenomena, based on empirical
evidence from observation and experimentation. Mechanisms such as peer review and
repeatability of findings are used to try to ensure the validity of scientific advances.
Natural science can be divided into two main branches: life science and physical science. Life
science is alternatively known as biology, and physical science is subdivided into
branches: physics, chemistry, astronomy and Earth science. These branches of natural science
may be further divided into more specialized branches (also known as fields). As empirical
sciences, natural sciences use tools from the formal sciences, such as mathematics and logic,
converting information about nature into measurements which can be explained as clear s
Humanities are academic disciplines that study aspects of human societyand culture.
In the Renaissance, the term contrasted with divinity and referred to what is now
called classics, the main area of secular study in universities at the time. Today, the
humanities are more frequently contrasted with natural, and sometimes social sciences,
as well as professional training.
The humanities use methods that are primarily critical, or speculative, and have a
significant historical element - as distinguished from the mainly empirical approaches of
the natural sciences, yet, unlike the sciences, it has no central discipline. [3] The
humanities include the study of ancient and modern
languages, literature, philosophy, history, archaeology, anthropology, human
geography, law, politics, religion, and art.
Understanding Social Sciences
Among other things, it helps to shape corporate strategies and government policies.
Social science examines the relationships between individuals and societies, as well
as the development and operation of societies, rather than studying the physical world
