1. Manual handling of heavy steel sections, ground steel 3 2 6 low
beam and two number steel columns
2. Excavations for ground beam into existing ground. 2 2 4 low
Ground can be clay, rubble, gravel
3. Lifting of heavy steel sections into place 3 3 9 medium
4. Slips, trips and falls 2 2 4 low
5. Working on Bandstands, scaffolding or towers 3 3 9 medium

SECTION 3 – WHO MAY BE HARMED

SECTION 4 – CONTROL MEASURES

1. Excavations are checked and shored up safely to avoid sides collapsing whilst installing
ground steel beam. Install ground steel beam to correct level and pack up using bricks or
blocks ready for concreting
2. Safely level off excavation using scaffold boards and double plywood once the ground
beam has been installed. This ensures there are no trip or slip hazards for workers in the
area.
3. Ensure appropriate Genie lifts are used to lift the top section of steel into place. Genie lifts
to be inspected before use and steel to be lifted in tandem if more than one genie lift being
used
4. Position the tops steel into place, bolt on the side columns and secure by fastening bolts
thoroughly.
5. Resin fix and bolt columns to brickwork behind and tighten all bolts to frame connections
ready for concreting bottom steel.

SECTION 5 – SEQUENCE OF WORKS

1. Excavate the trench in the ground for the ground steel beam. Check depths; shore up sides
of excavation to avoid collapse depending on soil conditions.
2. Install steel columns into place and bolt to ground steel section. Ensure all bolts are fully
tightened
3. Board over excavations, using scaffold boards, double layers of plywood to ensure a flat,
stable surface for Genie lifts with no trip or slip hazards. Area to be inspected before Genie
lifts are rolled onto flat surface.
4. Carefully lift upper steel section onto genie lifts and lift into place. Ensure if more than one
genie lift being used, the lifting is done in tandem to avoid steel losing balance.
5. Once in position, bolt the columns to the upper steel and tighten thoroughly. Use the genie
lifts to finally level out the steel frame and once level, ensure bottom steel section is
packed out using bricks/blocks to hold level.
6. Resin fix bolts through columns into existing brickwork behind and tighten steel flanges to
threaded bars using correct bolts. Hand tightens bolts on to bar. After two hours for resin
to set and finally tighten all bolts and check connection bolts.
7. Clear Genie lifts, clear flat platform and prepare for concreting ground beam.
