SOFTWARE – MATLAB

Aim: To observe variable of rotor angle and to find critical clearing time when
fault occurs at:
1. Sending end of the line
2. Mid-point of the line
3. When the fault at mid-point is cleared by removing the faulty line
of SMIB system

Apparatus: MATLAB
d2δ
Q- To model the swing equation M
d t2
= Pm - P e
A 60-Hz synchronous generator having inertia constant H = 5 MJ/MVA and a
direct axis transient reactance of X’d = 0.3 P.U is connected to an infinite bus
through a purely reactive circuit the reactance are marked on common base
system. The generator is delivering real power Pe = 0.8 P.U Q = 0.074 P.U to
infinite bus of V=1 P.U.
a ) A temporary three phase fault occur at sending end of line at point F

when the fault is cleared, both lines are intact. Determine critical clearing angle
and critical clearing time.
b ) a three phase fault occur at middle of one of lines, the fault is cleared and
the fault line is isolated. Determine the critical clearing angle.

A) for the fault occurring at point F

Simulation –

For various values of the T critical = 0.453 then fault will be cleared
which we obtained from trial and error
For t<0.453

For t>0.453

B) for the fault occurring at mid-point

Simulation –

For various values of the T critical = 0.41 then fault will be cleared
which we obtained from trial and error

For t<0.41

For t>0.41 fault will pertain
