WHAT IS AN
ELECTRIC
CAR?
4

An electric car is a car which is

propelled by one or more electric
motors, using energy stored
in rechargeable batteries.

WHEN AND WHO

MADE IT?
6
In 1828, Ányos Jedlik invented an early type of electric motor,
and created a small model car powered by his new motor.
Between 1832 and 1839, Scottish inventor Robert Anderson
also invented a crude electric carriage.
The world first electric car was made by Gustave Trouve which
was actually a tricycle, made in 1881.
Andreas Flocken built the first real electric car in 1888.
In 1884 Thomas parker built an electric car that uses special
design high-capacity rechargeable batteries.
In 1897 electric cars found their first commercial use as taxis.

HOW DO THEY
WORK??
8
Electric cars function by plugging into a
charge point and taking electricity from the
grid. They store the electricity in rechargeable
batteries that power an electric motor, which
turns the wheels.
Electric vehicle can be charged by plugging
it into a public charging station or into a
home charging unit but at home charging it is
important to get the right amount of
electricity tariff

STRUCTURE OF
ELECTRIC
CAR
12
BATTERY
The batteries used in electric vehicles require minimal energy
when the vehicle is started. The most important part of an
electric vehicle is its battery the most common battery in
electrical vehicle are lithium ion and lithium polymer because
of their high energy to weight ratio light batteries are
desirable because they reduce the weight of the vehicle and
improve its performance .
13
MOTOR CONTROLLER
The motor controller of an electric car administers its
complete operation and the distribution of its power at any
given moment. It acts as a floodgate between the motor and
batteries. It helps monitor and regulates all key performance
indications such as the vehicle’s operator, motor, battery,
and accelerator pedal. It has a microprocessor which can
limit or redirect current.
14
ELECTRIC ENGINE

An electric engine depends on the car’s system

voltage. They can be structured to use either AC or
DC current. AC motors are less expensive and lighter
compared to DC engines.

EV BATTERIES
CAPACITY AND KWH EXPLAINED

Kilowatts (kW) is a unit of power (how much energy a device

needs to work). An average home consumes 3,100 kWh of
energy a year. An electric car consumes an average of 2,000
kWh of energy a year.
In an electric car braking converts and stores thermal energy
from brake pads and tires' heat friction and reuses it to
power the car. This is called regenerative braking.

With rapid growth in electric car sales over the

past decade, electric cars make up about 1% of
the global car fleet today. In the Sustainable
Development Scenario (SDS), 13% of the global
car fleet is electric by 2030, requiring annual
average growth of 36% per year between 2019
and 2030.
