Exercise 17-1—Estimating Permeability with the

One Point Method
Given the following reservoir and fluid property data, estimate the reservoir permeability
using the one point method.

φ = 0.077 h = 32 ft rw = 0.25 ft
pwf = 500 psia pi = 4,500 psia s' = +2.0
Bg = 1.106 bbl/Mscf µg = 0.0183 cp ct = 1.436×10-4 psi-1
qg = 132.2 Mscf/D Gp = 142.4 Mscf

Solution:

Calculate equivalent producing time:

t=
24G p
=
(24)(142.4) = 25.85 hr
qg (132.2)

Make initial guess for k = 0.1 md

Iteration 1:
Calculate transient drainage radius:

(0.1)(25.85)
12
⎛ ⎞
12
kt ⎛ ⎞
rd = ⎜ ⎟ = ⎜⎜ ⎟ = 184.1 ft
⎝ (377 )(0.077 )(0.0183)(1.436 × 10 ) ⎠
⎜ 377φ µ c ⎟ −4 ⎟
⎝ g t ⎠

Calculate new value of permeability k:

141.2q g Bg µ g ⎡ ⎛ rd ⎞ ⎤
k= ⎢ln⎜⎜ ⎟⎟ − 0.75 + s'⎥
h ( pi − p wf ) ⎣ ⎝ rw ⎠ ⎦

=
(141.2)(132.2)(1.106)(0.0183) ⎡ln⎛ 184.1 ⎞ − 0.75 + 2⎤
(32)(4,500 − 500) ⎢ ⎜ 0.25 ⎟ ⎥
⎣ ⎝ ⎠ ⎦
= 0.0232 md

Iteration 2:
Calculate new radius:

(0.0232)(25.85)
12
⎛ ⎞
12
kt ⎛ ⎞
rd = ⎜ ⎟ = ⎜⎜ ⎟ = 88.6 ft
⎝ (377 )(0.077 )(0.0183)(1.436 × 10 ) ⎠
⎜ 377φ µ c ⎟ −4 ⎟
⎝ g t ⎠

17--Well Test Design

Calculate new value of permeability k:

141.2q g Bg µ g ⎡ ⎛ rd ⎞ ⎤
k= ⎢ln⎜⎜ ⎟⎟ − 0.75 + s'⎥
h ( pi − p wf ) ⎣ ⎝ rw ⎠ ⎦

=
(141.2)(132.2)(1.106)(0.0183) ⎡ln⎛ 8.6 ⎞ − 0.75 + 2⎤
(32)(4,500 − 500) ⎢ ⎜ 0.25 ⎟ ⎥
⎣ ⎝ ⎠ ⎦
= 0.0210 md

Iteration 3:
Calculate new radius:

(0.0210)(25.85)
12
⎛ ⎞
12
kt ⎛ ⎞
rd = ⎜ ⎟ = ⎜⎜ ⎟ = 84.4 ft
⎝ (377 )(0.077 )(0.0183)(1.436 × 10 ) ⎠
⎜ 377φ µ c ⎟ −4 ⎟
⎝ g t ⎠

Calculate new value of permeability k:

141.2q g Bg µ g ⎡ ⎛ rd ⎞ ⎤
k= ⎢ln⎜⎜ ⎟⎟ − 0.75 + s'⎥
h ( pi − p wf ) ⎣ ⎝ rw ⎠ ⎦

=
(141.2)(132.2)(1.106)(0.0183) ⎡ln⎛ 8.6 ⎞ − 0.75 + 2⎤
(32)(4,500 − 500) ⎢ ⎜ 0.25 ⎟ ⎥
⎣ ⎝ ⎠ ⎦
= 0.0209 md

At this point, calculation has converged for all practical purposes.
