Reflection 2

As an aspiring mechanical engineer, we are required to learn and master different set of
skills in the field of engineering. Whether it may be math-related or hands-on activities, these are
all important in being a successful engineer. However, one of the most important skill that we
should learn as students is knowing how to weld. This will allow us to explore and be more
creative with our designs and inventions. The video made by our professor provided rich
information about the basics of welding.

After watching the video, the first thing that came

into my mind is that safety is the number one priority. It is
important for us to know the safety protocols when welding
in order for us to avoid unwanted accidents that may lead
to minor or major injuries. The most basic safety protocol is
wearing the proper personal protective equipment. This
consists of gloves, long sleeves, overalls, boots, and the
proper welding face shield. Another safety protocol
knowing how to handle the tools used in welding. It should
be placed properly in a position that is safe.

Furthermore, it is important for us

to know the parts of the welding machine
and other stuffs used when welding. The
basic tools mentioned in the video made
me realized that welding is doable as long
as you have the right tools and PPE. Also,
being able to know the parts allows us to
have a deeper understanding on how to
weld and make us more efficient. Knowing
the types of welding rods will help us
determine what is best for our project. In
addition, it will help us in replacing if some
parts get broken.
Lastly, I realized that welding was not easy. It is not
only about applying heat to two metals, but there are
many factors that we should keep in mind when
performing this activity. Some of these factors are the
proper positioning of the arc and the work. Knowing the
proper positioning and techniques such as weaving
patterns are important because we will know what
technique of welding is suitable. For example, if we want
to combine metals temporarily, we should do tack weld.
In conclusion, Welding is important for us aspiring engineers for knowing how to weld is
a skill that will help us in our projects or inventions in the future. However, we should know the
basics of welding and its safety protocol for us to have a better understanding and output. Lastly,
it is important for us to be able to practice how to weld in order for us to become efficient and
not forget the safety protocols and rules in welding.
