LESSON PLAN
I. Objectives:
Within the period, the students are expected to:
 State the uses of modal verbs.
 Express awareness in using modal verbs.
 Apply the use of modal verbs in different situation.

II. Subject Matter


Topic: MODAL VERBS (PERMISSION, OBLIGATION, AND PROHIBITION)

Time Allotment: 60 minutes

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities (5 minutes)

A4. Review
 The teacher will ask about the previous lesson.
 The teacher will ask the class to give a recap of the previous lesson.

B. Motivation (5 minutes)
 The teacher will introduce the game, (I did or I didn’t).
 Students will make a list of 10 things, 5 of them are things they wouldn’t do and 5
are things they would do.
 Students will be put into pairs randomly and they had to decide which statements
are things their partner would actually do.

C. Presentation/Discussion (15 minutes


 The teacher will discuss the modal verbs- permission, prohibition and obligation.

D. Activity (5 minutes)
 The teacher will ask to look for a pair.
 The teacher will provide a flashcard with an image of places (e.g Library, swimming
pool, school, church etc.)
 Each pair will pick a card they are assigned.
 Teacher will ask them to write 10 rules for this place using modal verbs.

E. Analysis (10 minutes)


 The teacher will prepare a series of sentences about typical rules in society (See
examples below) and ask students to complete them with modal verb so that they
are for their country.
1. You vote in elections.
2. You drink alcohol at the age of 18.
3. You get married at the age of 15.
4. You drive a car at the age of 14.
5. You do military service when you are 18.
 After answering these 5 questions, they must include an explanation and the
teacher will randomly pick a name of students to explain in front of the her or his
classmates.

F. Abstraction generalization (5 minutes)


 The teacher will ask to enumerate the modal verbs.
 The teacher will ask what are the functions of modal verbs.
 The teacher will ask why is it necessary to study the modal verbs.

G. Application (10 minutes)


 With the same pair in the first activity, the student will be asked to make their own
Traffic and Road sign wherein they can apply their imagination as well as the modal
verbs.
 Random pair will be selected to discuss their work.

IV. Assessment (10 minutes)

Choose the right forms have to, don’t have to, can, can’t, should or shouldn’t to complete the following
sentences in English.

1. You shout at the children. It frightens them.


2. I’m sorry but you bring your dog in here. Its forbidden.
3. You have a visa before travelling to the USA. It’s a law.
4. You stay in the library till eight o’clock. It is open all evening.
5. I think you think carefully before you sell the house.
6. You buy a new alarm clock. This one is broken.
7. You wear uniform at our new school.
8. You leave your bag open on the bus.
9. We go now or we will be late.
10. She dances very well, but she can’t sing.

V. Assignment (5 minutes)

 Ask your parents what are the things that you are not allowed to do and things that
you are free to do.
 Construct 10 sentences with the use of modal verbs, based on what your parents
told you.
 Present your answer in front of the class.
