Have a wonderful day students! Our country
is one of those that located along the Pacific
ring of fire, as a result, Philippines is a home
to many volcanoes.

Hold your breath and let’s reveal the secrets

behind that ocean of fire!

MAIN TASK:

Characterize a Volcano

This material will let you be able to:

1) describe a volcano
2) classify volcanoes as active or inactive
3) know the signs of an impending volcanic eruption
4) know the things to do before, during and after volcanic eruption?

GROUP WORK: BUILD A VOLCANO

Each group will need the following:

 Newspaper
 Soil from the garden or modelling clay or salt dough (to make salt dough, mix 6 cups
flour, 2 cups salt, 4 tablespoons oil and 2 cups water together)
 Small empty cool drink can with lid cut off
 Baking pan/Container with high slides
 60 ml warm water mixed with 1 teaspoon red food coloring
 Liquid detergent
 2 tablespoon (25 ml) baking soda
 ¼ cup of vinegar
 A funnel (you can make one by folding paper into a cone shape)

 Cover your work area with newspaper.

 Place the empty can in a container/baking pan, and mold the clay, dough, or soil into
a “mountain” around the can. Do not cover the can opening or allow any material to
get inside.
 Fill the can almost to the top with warm water mixed with a little red food coloring.
 Add 6 drops of liquid detergent to the can.
 Pour the vinegar slowly into the bottle.
 Add the baking soda to the can using a funnel.

1. Write down your observations.

2. What does the red, foamy mixture represent?
3. Why did the vinegar and baking soda react when mixed together?
