EARTH PRESSURE
214.1 Lateral Earth Pressure
Structure designed to retain earth fills shall be proportioned to withstand pressure calculated in accordance with any rational theory. Coulomb’s theory shall be
acceptable for non-cohesive soils. For cohesive soil Coulomb’s theory is applicable with Bell’s correction. For calculating the earth pressure at rest Rankine’s
theory shall be used.
Point of Application: The centre of pressure exerted by the backfill, when considered dry, is located at an elevation of 0.42 of the height of the wall above the
base and 0.33 of height of wall when considered wet.

Breaking Force:( As Per IRC:6-2000, 214.2)

Braking force = 20% of the weight of the design vehicle (Class A)
Height of deck surface from the pier cap= 2.552 m
And this force acts along the bridge at 1.2m above the road level 3.75 m at bearing level
Total weight of the IRC Class A vehicle = 700 kN
Therefore braking force length = 140 kN
Moment Due to Breaking Force 525.28 kN-m

Effect of buyoncy [IRC:6-2000, 216.4 (a)]

Area of stem at top = 3.142 m²
Depth of submerged part of Pier = 6.25 m
Volume of submerged part of pier = 19.63 m³
Net upward force due to buyoncy = -196.35 kN

Pier_CAP+STEM 542531715.xls
Design of Pier Cap and Stem 24
Frictional force due to resistance of bearings (temperature effect)
Lateral force due to frictional resistance of bearings, 62.48 kN
And this force acts along the bridge at 7.30 m from base of stem
Moment due to temperature effect 456.11 kN-m

Force due to water current

Exposed height to water current 6.25 m
perimeter Area exposed 19.63 m
Maximum mean velocity m/sec 3
Maximum velocity, Sqrt(2)*V, (IRC:6-2000,213.3), V = 4.24
Shape factor for square end (IRC:6-2000, 213.2), K = 0.66
Pressure intensity =0.5KV² (IRC:6-2000, 213.2) = 5.94
Hence force due to water current = 77.75 kN
Moment due to water current 485.97 kN-m

Symbol Area Distance from back face Weight kN

W1 3.5 1.75 33.60
W2 4.6375 1.17 44.52
Total 8.1375 78.12
C.G. of returnwall from A 1.418 m
Dead Load moment at face of abutment 110.74 Kn-m
Accidental live load on the edge of the wingwall = 114 Kn
So, Live Load Moment at the face of Abutment 598.5 Kn-m
Hence Total design mement Due to Live load and dead load 709.24 Kn-m
Due to Earth pressure

Wing wall+Bearing
Design of Wing Wall 33

Horizontal force due to earth pressure including Live load surcharge is given by
0.5* g * H² * tan²(45° - f/2)*L=
Total Height of wing wall including live load surcharge (1.2m) 4.85 m
So the horizontal pressure is 94.08 kN
Moment by earth pressure including live load surcharge = 191.64 Kn-m (acting from 0.42H)

Design For Vertical Load
