Introduction of the Topic

Lesson 1: Visualizes numbers up to 100 000 with emphasis on numbers 10 001 – 100 000.
This lesson on whole numbers covers the key concept on visualizing numbers from 10 001 up
to 100 000 by presenting how it is grouped by tens, by hundreds, by thousands, and ten thousands.
Using number discs, we visualize number 34 546 as shown below.
Example 1:

1 000 10 1
100
10 000 1 000 100 10 1
10 000 1

30 000 4 000 500 40 6

“34 546 means 3 ten thousands, 4 thousands, 5 hundreds, 4 tens, and 6 ones

Lesson 2: Place value and value of a digit in numbers up to 100 000.

What is Place Value? In math, every digit in a number has a place value. Place value can
be defined as the value represented by a digit in a number on the basis of its position in the number.

Example Problem:
In 2019, Barangay Camarin harvested 73 619 kilograms of Avocados.
What does each digit in 73 619 mean?
Study how 73 619 is written in the place value chart.
Ten thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
10 000 1 000 100 10 1
7 3 6 1 9
The digit 9 is in the ones place. Its value is 9.
The digit 1 is in the tens place. Its value is 10.
The digit 6 is in the hundreds place. Its value is 600.
The digit 3 is in the one thousands place. Its value is 3 000.
The digit 7 is in the ten thousands place. Its value is 70 000.
The value of a digit is determined by multiplying that digit by its place value.

⮚ More Examples:
Write the expanded form of numbers in standard form.
1) 85 786 = 80 000 + 5 000 + 700 + 80 + 6
2) 53 910 = 50 000 + 3 000 + 900 + 10 + 0
3) 38 517 = 30 000 + 8 000 + 500 + 10 + 7
Note: Expanded form is a way of writing numbers to see the value of individual digits.

Lesson 3. Reads and writes numbers, in symbols and in words, up to hundred

thousand and compare them using relation symbols

A. The Bureau of Forest Development donated three

seedlings to each pupil in Region 3. The total number of Bureau of Forest
seedlings donated was 83 165.
How do you read and write in words and in symbol, the
Development
number that represents the seedlings donated?
The number is read as “Eighty-three thousand one hundred
sixty-five.” and can be written as 83 165 in symbol.

Ten thousands Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones

10 000 1 000 100 10 1
8 3 1 6 5

More Examples:
Write the following numbers in words.
1) 92 327 – Ninety-two thousand three hundred twenty-seven
2) 61 574 – Sixty-one thousand five hundred seventy-four
Write the following numbers in symbols
1) Thirty-six thousand one hundred five – 36 105
2) One hundred thousand two hundred forty-one – 100 241
B. We use the symbol < > = to compare numbers.
A > B means A is greater than B
A < B means A is less than B
A = B means A is equal to B
Example:
1. 100 001 > 100 100
2. 67 921 < 69 321
3. 12 200 = 12 200

Remember

To visualize numbers from 10 001 up to 100 000. We use number discs such as 10 000s,
1 000s, 100s, 10s, and 1s.

In giving the place value and value of a digit of a number up to 100 000
⮚ Identify the place value of the digit if it is ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten
thousands and hundred thousands
⮚ The value of a digit can be obtained by multiplying the said digit by its place value
⮚ The place value of a digit is always 10 times as great as the place value of the digit to
its right.

To write large numbers in figures, we use spaces or commas to separate the digits
into periods or groups of three starting from the right. Use zero as a place value holder
when necessary.
To compare numbers, we start comparing the digit from left most place until we come
across unequal digits.

Check your Understanding
