I. Introduction

To understand any phenomenon in Physics we have to perform experiments.

Experiments require measurements and we measure several physical properties like
length, mass, time, temperature, pressure and many more. Experimental verification of
laws and theories also need measurement of physical properties.

II. Learning Objectives

4. Identify different units.

III. Topics and Key Concepts

A physical property that can be measured and described by a number is
called physical quantity.
Example:
● Mass of a person is 56 kg.
● Length of a whiteboard is 2m.
● Area of a room is 76m2.
● Temperature of a room is 22°C.
Types of physical quantities
1. FUNDAMENTAL QUANTITIES
The physical quantities which do not depend on any other physical quantities for
their measurements are known as fundamental quantities.
Example: Mass Time
Length Temperature

2. DERIVED QUANTITIES
The physical quantities which depend on one or more fundamental quantities for
their measurements are known as derived quantities.
Example: Area Speed
Volume Force

The standard used for the measurement of a physical quantity is called a unit.
Examples:
● Mass – Kilogram, gram, pound
● Length – Kilometer, meter, foot, inch, centimeter
● Time – hour, minute, second
● Temperature – Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin
Characteristics of units
It is well – defined, suitable size, reproducible, invariable, indestructible and
internationally acceptable.
Seven Fundamental Units
FUNDAMENTAL SI UNIT SYMBOL
QUANTITY
Length Metre m
Mass Kilogram kg
Time Second s
Temperature Kelvin K
Electric Current Ampere A
Luminous Intensity Candela cd
Amount of Substance Mole mol

Rules for writing SI Units

1. Full name of unit always starts with small letter even if named after a person.
Example: newton
ampere
coulomb
2. Symbol for unit named after a scientist should be in capital letter.
Example: N for newton
K for kelvin
A for ampere
C for coulomb
3. Symbol for all other units are written in small letters.
Example: m for meter
s for second
kg for kilogram

4. One space is left between the last digit of numeral and the symbol of a unit.
Example: 92 kg
5N
15 m
5. The units do not have plural form.
Example: 8 meter
18 kg
30 second
20 kelvin
6. Full stop should not be used after the units.
Example: 10 meter not 10 meter.
7. No space is used between the symbols for units.
Example: 8 Js not 8 J s

IV. Teaching and Learning Materials and Resources

1. PowerPoint presentation
2. E-book

V. Learning Task

Write an essay that consist of at least 75 words about units and elaborate the
importance of units in the development of our society. (20pts)

Units and Measurement are essential to mostly everything because it helps find
accurate size. It is important to science, chemical industry, farming, engineering,
construction, manufacturing, commerce, and numerous other occupations and activities.
So what is measurement and unit?

Measurement is the process of ascertaining the quantity of matter in a particular body.

Units, nonetheless, give the meaning to the measurement. In getting the measurement
of a certain physical quantity, accuracy is preferable than precision. In the English
system of measurement, people measure things using body parts and familiar objects.
For example, a human-size foot. However, in the metric system, there is an official
system of measurement. That is why the metric system, is almost used in every country
in the world. In conclusion, both are essential in the development of our society.
