The Endel Mask Dance
The Endel Mask Dance is a traditional Tegal dance that grew up in Slarang Lor village, Dukuhwaru
sub-district, Tegal district. The Tegal Mask Dance is a dance specifically for women, because it
describes the behavior and character of Tegal women. This dance was created by seeing the reality
that happens and is seen every day by the choreographer and combined with Sundanese-style
dance movements.
In the show, the mask is only used in the middle. Initially, the dancers were still themselves and
danced gently and gracefully until the middle of the show when they then wore masks and
performed movements according to the character of the masks they were wearing.
When wearing masks, dancers present more challenging, energetic movements, seem bold and
erotic. The dance movements when the dancers are masked tend to be like the Sundanese style of
dance in West Java. When the show is about to end, the mask is removed and the dancers seem to
be back to being themselves.
At present, the Endel Mask Dance is widely known and has become the pride of the people in the
City and Regency of Tegal, and this dance has even been awarded the title of a MURI record after
being danced by 1,700 dancers, all of whom are elementary school students.
