Science 7
Teacher Ma. Carmela Estrada
September 21-25

Objectives
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
 investigate properties of unsaturated or saturated solutions (S7MT-Ic-2);
 express concentrations of solutions quantitatively by preparing different
concentrations of mixtures according to uses and availability of materials (S7MT-
Id-3); and
 distinguish mixtures from substances based on a set of properties (S7MT-Ie-f-4).

Separating Mixtures

Mixtures is consisting of two or more substances that are mixed but not
chemically combined. They do not have well defined specific properties. Can be
separated into its components by physically means.

Ways of Separating Mixtures

Hand Picking – solid mixtures can be separated by hand picking. This is only useful
when the particles are large enough to be seen clearly.
Winnowing – in winnowing the mixtures is allowed to fall from a height. The lighten
components get separated from the heavier ones, because of the wind or air blows.
This method is used to separate lighter husk from heavier Grains like wheat.
Threshing – This is the method that is generally used by a farmer to separate a grain
from the stalks after harvesting.
Magnetic Attraction or Magnetism – is a process in which magnetically susceptible
material is extracted from a mixture using a magnetic force.
1

Sifting or Sieving – used to separate a dry mixture which contains substances of

different sizes by passing it though a sieve.
Filtration – is commonly mechanical or physical operation which is used for the
separation of solids from liquids
Sedimentation – is the process by which the insoluble, heavy solid particles settle down
their own in a solution.
Decantation – is the process of obtaining clear liquid by pouring a solution from a
container in order to leave the sediments I the bottom of the original container.
Sublimation – is the process in which a solid change directly into gaseous state on
heating.
Evaporation – is a process in which a liquid change into a gaseous form on heating.
Allowing the liquid to evaporate, leaving the soluble solid behind.
Distillation – is a process in which the mixture is separated by heating a solution
condensing using a cooling tube. Th liquid collected is called “distillate”.
