ASSIGNMENT – LU 1
DUE DATE: 23 MARCH 2021, no later than 11:00 AM
TOTAL: 85 MARKS

Instructions
For each of the questions below, you are required to type your solution in Microsoft Word and submit via the
Turnitin link for “Assignment LU1” on Blackboard. The letter X corresponds to the last digit of your student
number, Y corresponds to the second last digit and Z to the third last digit. You must show detailed workings of
your solution. For each of the questions, all the data required for the chemicals are available on Blackboard as
“Additional Information”. Please consult the class notes for useful equations to use. Please do not email your
submission but upload it on Turnitin.

QUESTION 1
A horizontal cylinder is separated into two compartments by an adiabatic, frictionless piston. One side contains
{0.2 + (X × 0.015} m3 of gas Y and the other side contains {0.1 + (0.007 × Z) + (0.002 × Y)} kg of gas Z, both
initially at 20 oC and 95 kPa. The sides of the cylinder and the gas Z end are insulated. Now heat is added to the
gas Y side from a reservoir at 500 oC until the pressure of both gas Y and gas Z rises to 120 kPa.

Gas Y:
0: air 5: ethane
1: ammonia 6: ethylene
2: n-butane 7: nitric oxide
3: carbon dioxide 8: hydrogen chloride
4: carbon monoxide 9: methane

Gas Z:
0: iso-butane 5: chlorine
1: nitrogen 6: 1-butene
2: oxygen 7: hydrogen sulphide
3: propane 8: nitrous oxide
4: acetylene 9: sulphur dioxide

QUESTION 2
Two rigid tanks are connected by a valve. Tank A is insulated and contains {0.2 + (X × 0.005} m3 of steam at 400
kPa and {80 + (Y × 0.85)} % quality. Tank B is uninsulated and contains {3 + (Z × 0.07)} kg of steam at 200 kPa
and 250 oC. The valve is now opened and steam flows from tank A to tank B until the pressure in tank A drops
to 300 kPa. During this process {610 + (X × 8) + (Y × 4) + (Z × 5)} kJ of heat is transferred from tank B to the
surroundings at 0 oC.

A B

x=? 250 oC

Assuming the steam remaining inside tank A to have undergone a reversible adiabatic process, answer the
following questions:

a) Determine the final temperature in tank A [oC]

at a rate of 1 kmol/s. If gas X is an ideal gas, what is the discharge temperature of gas X?

Where X is:
0: air 5: ethane
1: ammonia 6: ethylene
2: n-butane 7: nitric oxide
3: carbon dioxide 8: hydrogen chloride
4: carbon monoxide 9: methane
