SEMESTER 1
NU16UAR009
Nitte Institute of Architecture
3 August 2016
“Ideas are the building blocks of idea. Whatever good things we build end up building us .”

Assignment :We had to choose any of the famous monument and do a collage using circles ,
squares and equilateral triangles to make the monument.
•It was an exercise to understand the shape composition or even divide the monument into
circles, squares and equilateral triangle.

•It was an individual exercise .

Concept: Taj Mahal.

Idea: As the real monument is made up of makrana marble white paper has been used to
represent it. In contrast with white , yellow is used as the background.
•Circle is used for tomb ,square pieces is used for walls, triangular and rectangular pieces is
used for doors and windows and equilateral triangle is used for tomb peak.
•The pieces are not colored entirely to represent pure white makrana marbles .Grey shade
has been given using crayons to show shadow of the monument. Yellow orange shade is given
for doors shadow.
•As the front view is done in 2D , to give a 3D look pillars are done in prospective .

Conclusion :We learnt the use of composition of different type of shape to representate the monument. We learnt that by arranging these shapes we can do a
interesting 2D monument collage.
“Failing to plan is planning to fail.
Plan your execution and execute your plan.”
10 August 2016
In architecture a floor plan is a drawing showing a view from above, of the relationships between rooms, spaces and other physical features at one level of a structure.

Group Members: Ayesha ,Sai Deepa,

Disha, Yadhu, Prakyath, Shrutha Dev ,
Kavya, Aishwarya.

Assignment: We had to go around our

college ground floor and memorize the
plan of that floor and draft the plan
roughly as we understand the space.

Idea :
•Two color pens were used red for the
main boundary and black for the detail
of steps ,doors and open spaces.
•Sticky notes were stuck to write about
object present in yellow and activities
happening in blue sticky note.

Conclusion :
•Plenty of mistakes were made when drafting the plan from which we learnt that what we see and visualize
depends on how we use that space.
•Mistakes which we realized were courtyard which had to be square seemed rectangular for us as we walk
along one side to reach our studio.
•our studio had to be square but we assumed it to be rectangular as door is at one corner and we should walk
bit more distance to reach any of the window.
•The transition space where the air passes we drew a thin black line so as to represent the connectivity with
the environment and it is connected to each other but we don’t feel boundary between nature and us as it is
more like open space without a wall partition.
•Classroom turned out to be unequal division as we use room -1 the most and it made us think that other half
is smaller.
•Faculty rooms which we had never entered on the first initial days of the college was drafted irregular and
small.
11 August 2016

“Door is the hand shake of the building .”

Assignment : Collage means cutting pieces and arranging . Every group was assigned a
monument and using magazines pieces we had to depict the entire monument with its
importance, including the economy and activities simultaneously happening around the
monument .

Group Members: Ayesha ,Sai Deepa ,Disha,Yadhu,Prakyath,Shrutha Dev , Kavya and Aishwarya.

Architect : The gateway of India was designed and planed by George Wittet.

Idea and Concept :

•It is located on the waterfront in the Apollo Bunder and overlooks the Arabian Sea so we
have given thin layer of water using blue pieces.
•A location pin point is used and the word “The Gate way of India” is cut out with individual
alphabets and stuck on it.
•The structure is a basalt arch hence light and dark brown pieces is used to give that
appearance.
•There was a crude oil jetty used by the fishing community so boat is stuck symbolizing fishing
, which was later renovated to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary
at Apollo Bunder, when they visited India in 1911.
•Many visitors come to this spot once they are in Mumbai hence peoples pictures and people
clicking selfie front of the Gateway is been stuck. Now-a-days people even protest in front of
the gateway.
•It is a movie location and many movies have been shot in front of the gate such as Parinda,
Nayagan, Bombay, Singham returns etc. so you can find few bollywood pictures. Mumbai is
also famous for its food so few local food pictures have been added.

Conclusion: we learnt about geography, history ,location, economy and trivia about and around the monument .
Experience :
23 August 2016 •It was the first time we
worked with POP bandages.
When bandages were applied
on skin it gave cool feeling as
heat was transferred to the
bandages.
•It sets slowly and hardens
and becomes completely dry
after 30 minutes.
•We should carefully remove
the casting ,managing not to
damage it(cracks).
•After this, castings must be
jointed and fill the hollow
space with paper mesh to
retain the shape and give a
finishing touch finally.

We used plaster of Paris bandages to prepare the casting of Concept : It is a concept of a girl

30-40 minutes.

Conclusion : We learnt to make use of the POP bandages which we had just seen used by the doctors for fracture purpose. We learnt casting different body parts in
different ways and give a realistic look . We even learnt to install it in campus.
“Music is shorthand of emotion and
15 September 2016 emotion is energy in motion.”

“Emotion” is a strong feeling deriving

from ones circumstances in life.
Sometimes its not the song that make
you emotional but it is the people and
thing that come to your mind when you
here it.

Theme: Joy and Happiness.

Group Members :Ayesha, Yadhu,
Prakyath and Shiham.

Some of the examples for emotions are

anger ,jealousy ,fear , excitement,
•The song selected was “Happy” by Pharrell William .All worries are forgotten and we
happiness etc.
be happy listening to it .
• It has a line “Happiness is a feel like a room without a roof” , hence we have done
Assignment was to select a music a open structure and another line “Happiness is what you want to do” ,so we used
suitable for the assigned emotion and our own ideas to give the feeling of joy and happiness.
design the model according to the feel of
the music.
Idea : Joy is the feeling of great happiness . Happiness is a positive feeling.
•Stress ball which has a smiley face  symbolize joy and happiness.
•Use of light(tints) and bright colors like yellow, blue ,pink ,green ,red, purple and
orange is been done as they are colors of joy and happiness. Use of curves expresses
unlimitness.
• White rose are called Bridal rose as she be happy on her wedding day and that is
why it is used in the model.
•The tower is placed at left side to get a entire view of the model. Watching waves
brings internal happiness and smile on our face.
• Paper cup flower is made as flowers symbolize happiness.

Conclusion : We learnt that music plays an important role for describing the emotion of the person and colors as well as shape play an important aspect.
21 September 2016

“Life is a balance between rest and movement.”

Assignment : We had to a select motion of any

of the object visible or invisible and show it in 2D
and 3D model.
Light
Concept :
•Light was the concept selected by Sonia and
me.
• it was an inspiration from a light house .
• A lighthouse is a tower designed to emit light
from lamps and lenses, it serve as a navigation at
sea or on inland waterways and even aerial
navigation.
•A lighthouse sends a powerful beam of light
which travels significant distances from the point 3 - Dimension
of origin hence the triangle tip is attached and
the wider edge indicates spreading of light.
•This light constantly rotates in a circular motion
around the lighthouse hence rays are attached
to hexagonal floor in 2 layers which have
different diameter. Rays are stuck in two 2 - Dimension
different layer even to depict once light rays falls
on land and once the light rays falls on water.
•Plane triangles is used as rays in 2D model and
in 3D model triangular based pyramids are used.

Conclusion : We learnt how to give volume to 2D model and make it 3D model and the way movement occur in different direction
in different aspects.
Group Members:

made.

Conclusion:
•Red dot need not be red in color.
•The dot need not be done using pen/pencil. It can be
any dot type object placed on the paper.
•Many ways were discovered to represent red dot
which was out of the box.
•All came up with different type of dots like, different
size of paper, different position of dots etc.
•We realized that the way we think is different is
different from each other.

• A red pin board is pinned •A sheet was colored red and cut it into tiny random
on a A4 sheet which is a red pieces and just kept on a A4 sheet without sticking it, in
dot. a circular position which forms a red dot.
Focus means the centre of attention or the state of clear vision.

Assignment : In this exercise we had to click a picture which had three parts- fore
ground ,middle layer and back ground. We had to sketch that picture thrice in A2
sheet and paint it according to the focus area.

5 October 2016 Group Members: Ayesha , Sonia and Shiham.

Idea :
•I focused on fore ground the garden part , Foreground means at a short
Foreground
distance or nearby. Sonia focused on middle layer, Middle layer is equal distance
from near or its central and Shiham focused on background, Background means
at a great distance .
•The focus area was detailed and unfocused area we painted in a such a way that
it looks blur.
• The unfocussed area was given very light colors so that those be neglected.

Background
Middle Layer

Conclusion: We learnt that we can focus on only one thing at a time and it is very important to focus on one particular thing and it
can be even implemented on our life.
Transition Space
13 October 2016

Our life is a story of transition we leave one

chapter behind while moving to the next.

Three Dimensional Space

Top View
•It was an individual exercise.
Porch
•The main idea was to recognize
transition space around us. •I designed a single model in such a way that we can present it
in any angle and give meaning to it which explains all the
definition of transition space such as gateway ,semi open space
,car porch, porch, tent and 3D space.

•I created model using

•Transition space can be defined as connecting four trapezium pieces
space between two confined spaces or be link and jointed them in an
between indoor and outdoor space or it can be a abstract form.
semi open space i.e. not closed or an open sided •Transition space must
Gateway
shelter i.e. roof projecting. have enough light and
ventilation so I have
painted it yellow on
outer surface to
represent sun rays
falling on it which
indicates brightness .
Car Porch On inner surface is
painted blue to give a
cozy and shade feeling.
•Six positions is shown in a single model •The model is not

Semi open space that different transition
space positions can be
shown.
Conclusion : We learnt different types of transition space .We also learnt how to be creative, innovative and abstract.
26 October 2016
Idea :
•As pearl is enclosed inside a shell it shines and is safe which is a
positive space and depicts positive feeling and is painted yellow
which is the color of happiness and excitement .
•If the pearl is outside it looses its shine and value blue is painted
which resembles quietness.
•According to us Positive space means exploration and negative space
means restriction.

Assignment : To identify positive and negative space in our surrounding.

Members : Sonia and me worked as partners for this studio.

Concept : We took the concept of a shell and abstracted it to tornado.

Colors define space. Hence different colors have been used .Pearl
is colored shiny blue. The shell is abstracted as tornado. Pearl is
placed at centre depicting eye of a tornado.

Conclusion : We learnt to understand positive and negative space. We realized that for each individual person positive and negative space differ due to their
feeling and understanding.
10 November ,2016

Aim : Paint on a library wall with concept of Reading.

Group Members : Ayesha , Anupriya, Chandana, Kavya,

Raaz, Hari Kiran, Aivan , Erwin, Deepa and Aishitha.

Idea and Concept: At the beginning a plan was drawn of The wall has been decorated by
the wall assigned to us putting our ideas and thoughts into arrangement of books on which “Reading is
it and finally came up with this idea and executed it Travelling of Minds “ is painted as doodle
•When books are been read with concentration form.
our mind travels according to the words.
•There is a cycle which resembles travelling as
most of them like to read when travelling , we took
the concept of “Travel Reading” and we can sit on
the cycle and read as a reading board is provided
on the handle of the cycle.

•We painted a huge tree and nailed books into

the wall ,books representing leaves on the
tree. we chose old books to give antic look.
• Book papers are made from wood pulp and
books gives us knowledge, hence it is an
“Knowledge Tree” .

There are two chairs provided to give ambience of a

garden which has got shade of the knowledge tree .

Conclusion: We learnt to do concept decor on a wall and it was a learning to get best out of waste like use of old books and cycle.
