Natesh Ullal is a film maker based in
Mangalore and has 30years of experience in
documentary film making. In the capacity
as a Director/Camera Person/Editor he has
worked on more than 90 documentaries/
video documentation projects on various
topics, including issues like Environment,
child rights, development, education,
etc. He is the director of INDEBAALYA,
a documentary on child labour in the
sericulture sector. His films has been
presented in Youth & Video Festival,
Bonn, Germany(1988) & at New Delhi Video
festival.
DAY 1

DAY 2
We learnt "Rule of Third" composition Script Treatment Script writing session was
which is required during taking picture or held by Miss Priyanka.Script gave voice for
recording video keeping visual composition our movie based on concept and theme
in mind. decided keeping the audience in mind.

DAY 3
We were given topics for our movie and we
wrote an essay on it and Script Treatment
was done.With the essay we wrote script
presentations in the form of storyboard
based on visual , audio and remarks was
created.

Rewriting the script separating visual and


narration including shot division based on
location ,activity, time of the day etc.

Shooting plan depended upon how many


seconds are we going to present the shot for
and keeping ready the system for interview
section and shooting etc.
DAY 4
We had a session on Shooting interviews
with Audio considerations by shooting a
lecture or talk-demo by setting the shutter
speed . Then we practised Interview and
talk trials keeping in mind the camera
moments and object positioning according
to light .Methods of bringing in more light
to the face when it is not available was
demonstrated.

Shooting was done one full day to


accomplish the needs according to the
story board and some of the shots had to be
retaken due to errors.

Voice was recorded at our college sound


proof studio.
DAY 5
Fundamentals of editing was taught to us
using Corel video studio. Edit plan was
discussed so as to how are we going to merge
all the shots together and how to sync the
audio and usage to Audacity software.
Hence editing took almost the whole day.
DAY 6
Presentation of rough cut video was
presented showing the sequence of shots.

Final edit/Touch up was done to the vedio


with background music transition slow
motion time lapse and subtitles etc.

The video was presented at college level for


audience of age group between 17-30 with
students and faculty to create awareness.
CONCLUSION
Basic Video production and video
documentation workshop provided us the
learning experiences that explored a few
elements of video documentation and short
video production.Through hands-on and
participatory sessions we are enabled to write
our own scripts, and collectively transform
the same into vibrant audiovisual packages.

In 6 days the workshop we covered


„Fundamentals of Video Camera,
„Basic camera movements and purpose.
„Concept and classification of shots,
„Principles of visual composition,
„Gathering the best sound with
available equipment
„Interview Technics,
„Simple script development,
„Planning and designing the shoot,
„Basic editing.

Dr Smita Hegde is expert in plant Molecular
biology, plant tissue culture, plant ecology
Bioremediation and plant biotechnology.
She is also involved in experimentation in
installation of hydroponic systems.

Blany is a passionate organic farmer who


grows over 100 varieties of vegetables and
fruits.
He is been doing this for last 25yrs and also
got awarded with multiple pretigious awards.
His work is broadcasted by many reputed
associations of emerging India.
DAY 1
We began our class with Dr Smitha Hegde
telling us about plant biology which gave us
information about plants and their various
requirements which was followed by a
session by Mr Blanny Dsouza where he told
us about his personal experience with the
plants and how he could overcome various
obstacles and was able to grow a successful
terrace and kitchen garden with a variety of
plants which was not native to Mangalore
climate. In the afternoon we visited his house to
experience for ourselves his terrace garden
followed by an explanation of the various
kinds of plants that he was growing on his
terrace like creepers, vegetables, fruits and
medicinal plants.
DAY 2
The second day he showed us various videos
on different methods of grafting plants like
bud grafting split grafting, stem end grafting
as well as root grafting.

We were given a hands on experience on


how to execute these methods of grafting.
Individually we learnt how to do these
grafting methods for ourselves.

We learnt the composition of the soil


required for the healthy growth of the plant,
the mixture contains 1:1:1:1 of soil, sand,
compost and coco pit, which must be mixed
thoroughly.
DAY 3
On the third day Ma’am gave us a lecture on
different plant growth regulators followed by
a planting session in our college backyard.
Altogether we planted 40 different fruiting
plants like lime, mango, starfruit, orange,
sweet lime, guava, chickoo, pomegranate etc.
DAY 4
On the fourth day of our workshop we had
a session with Dr Smitha Hegde where she
taught us about Hydroponics that is growing
plants in a nutrient solution without soil in
the afternoon we started the kitchen garden
in our backyard. which started with erecting
the pillars for support followed by the
construction of the wire mesh. we did three
types of sloping kitchen garden which are
horizontal, vertical and low level gardens.
DAY 5
On the fifth day we set up the hydroponic
garden and terratorium within our college
building with the guidance of Dr Smitha
Hegde.

Thus we learnt the various methods involved


in urban farming as well as hydroponics that
we can utilise and implement .
DAY 6
On this last day we planted seeds for our
kitchen garden and planted spinach plants
for the waist level tent. In the afternoon everybody gathered
around the garden area and we explained

“Weshould just look at new buildings, but


also at existing stock buildings, because
thats an even greater problem than the new
buildings being built.The renovation of
existing buildings and making them green
is just as important as designing new green
buildings.”

The above quote strikingly describes the


present status of the habitat loss in our
cities.Urban farming, Terrace gardens,
Urban agriculture, Hydroponics are all
terminologies that describe a system which
shows a beautiful hope to humanity, towards
making their cities greener and also self
sustaining.This workshop majorly dealed
with tharough understanding of these
systems. Indepth techniques of developing
our own terrace and kitchen gardens covered
through theory and practical prototype
development.

It was learning and the joy of growing our


own food.
