THE COMPOUND MICROSCOPE

I. COURSE OUTCOMES
At the end of the course, the student will be able to
(1) Identify and classify various plants in the Philippines based on their properties ,actions
and their related characteristics and structure
(2) Apply laboratory skills and field studies in collecting and organizing appropriate data on
plants.
(3) Analyze plant form and function, including selected taxonomy of flowering and non-
flowering plants.
II. INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
 Be familiar with the guidelines in conducting laboratory experiments;
 Utilize maximum use and proper care of the compound microscope.

III. INTRODUCTION
A microscope is an instrument used to see objects that are too small to be seen by the
naked eye. The early simple "microscopes" which were only magnifying glasses are more of a
novelty than a scientific tool. Antony Van Leeuwenhoek was the first man to make and use
simple microscopes.
There are several types of microscopes, and they may be grouped in different ways. To
describe how the instruments, interact with a sample to create images is either by sending a
beam of light or electrons to a sample in its optical path; or by scanning across, and a short
distance from, the surface of a sample using a probe.
A compound microscope is an optical instrument with two lens system: the objective and
the eyepiece or the ocular. It can magnify an image up to several hundred times the actual size of
an object. It may be monocular with only one eyepiece or binocular with two eyepieces; one for
each eye of the observer.
