III. Introduction/Review/Content:
What is the first term that comes in your mind when you hear the
word “Variable”?
In relation to your own research papers, what are the types of
variables you have in your study? What are those variables?
Why do you think we need to know the type of variable we have
in our study?
Let us discuss!
Together let us ponder the different concepts shown below. Let us try to relate the essential ideas
that could be valuable to our respective research papers.
What is Variable?
⚫ Amanipulates.
variable is any factor or property that a researcher measures, controls and/or
⚫ Itcanis referred as the changing quantity or measure of any factor, trait, or condition that
At this part, let us discuss the classifications of variables as well as their definition and functions.
Classifications of Variables
⚫
1.) Numeric Variables – answer “how many” or “how much”
Continuous Variables – can assume any value between a certain set of real numbers.
They depend on the scale used
Examples:
Time Age Temperature Height and Weight
⚫ Discrete NDDU-IBED-F-081
Variables – can only assume any whole value within the limits of the given
variables (e.g., number of business locations, number of children in the family, total
number of faculty members).
⚫
2. Categorical Variables – answer “what type” or “which category”
Ordinal Variables – can be logically ordered or ranked.
Examples:
Academic Grades Clothing Size
Measures of Attitude
⚫
3. Experimental Variables
Independent Variables –
usually
⚫ manipulated in an experiment.
Dependent Variables – usually
affected
by the manipulation of the
independent
variables. Also called “response”
or
⚫ “predicted variable”.
Extraneous Variables – also called
“mediating” or “intervening variables.”

4. Non-experimental Variables
Predictor Variables – changes the other variable/s in a non-experimental
study. Criterion Variables – usually influenced by the predictor variables
EXAMPLES:
1.Title of Research: Competencies of Teachers and Students’ Behavior in Selected
Private Schools
a. Predictor Variable: competencies of teachers
b. Criterion Variable: students’ behavior

⚫
5. Variables according to the number being studied
Univariate study: Only one variable is being studied
