What This Module is About
This module deals with strategies that include application of decision-making skills
and the use of resistance skills in different situations related to substance use and abuse.
Decision-making and resistance skills will help you enhance your knowledge, skills and
attitude in facing and overcoming real-life situations. You will practice these skills in class
and will be guided by your teacher. You will also learn healthy alternatives to prevent the use
of drugs of abuse.
Before you go through this learning module, you need to answer the pre-assessment
which checks your prior knowledge, processing and understanding of the topics.
Healthy alternatives to prevent the use of drugs as part of this module will keep you
understand and informed that even a drug dependent has its alternative ways to heal and
change themselves into better ones.
Lastly, this module is very important to each and every one of us to learn and be
knowledgeable about the use and abuse drugs. How these drugs has the capability to
destroy lives. And that’s why you need wise decision skills in order to avoid that.

What I Need to Know

This lesson deals on how to prevent and control the substance use and
abuse. The lesson will teach you how to make Decision-making skills and the of use
Resistance skills in different kind of situation. It will enhance your knowledge in deeper
understanding, thoughts and ideas and the attitude in facing and overcoming harmful
situation in life. You will have activity in the class that will enhance your capability as a
student and be guided by your teacher. And also provide some suggestion about healthy
alternatives to prevent the use of drugs of abuse.

What I Need to Know

Substance use and abuse is a very rampant and growing health problem worldwide.
Many of our officials do their very best just to stop the problem of drugs because it destroys
many lives especially to our youth today.
In this module, you are going to learn and discover how to apply prevention and control
in the use of drugs and its abuse. There are some activities to perform to give deeper
understanding and to guide you in life.

Lesson Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to;

 Learn about the different decision-making skills and resistance skills to prevent
substance use and abuse
 Apply decision-making and resistance skills in situations related to substance use
and abuse

Drugs are chemical substances that alter the mind and body. It can turn
harmful and even worse end up the life of an individual.
Prevention is the best way to fight and avoid the harmful effect of drugs.
People need to know and understand the factors that may harm them and
protect them from this kind of harmful substance.
The following are the risk factors that you should avoid:
 Poverty
 Aggressive behaviour
 Lack of self esteem
 Peer pressure
 Curiosity
 Less family supervision
 Boredom
 Availability of drugs

Make a poster that present the idea in the use and abuse of illegal drugs in the
Philippines or in your community for 15 minutes.

3. How can you relate this right now, regarding on what happen to our youth
today?

In this part of the lesson it give you an idea how harmful is the substances is. The
activity shows that as we go through our daily lives we are facing so much trouble and
problems in our society that involves the people that surrounds you. The teacher let you
discover from the news articles that you have found and read that drugs are not good to your
body. It gave you much understanding whoever was involved of each illegal incident, what
happened?, When did it happen?, where did it happen?, why did it happen?, and how did it
happen?. As you go thru with the activity it will give clear understanding and teach you how
to avoid those kinds of incidents and how it affects you.

Activity 2: 5 “Ws” and “H”


Cut at least two drug related articles from any local newspaper or magazine. Paste each
article in a short bond paper. Analyze each article using the format below.

Decision – making skills – are skills which is relevant to resistance skills, in this skills
you should gain confidence. Learn to motivate yourself with other things.

social pressure or self pressure.

Resistance Skills – are skills that a person will say No and leave on a harmful situation. It will
help individuals practice on how to reinforce decision making.

Create your very own armor shield against drug use, abuse and dependence. Be
Very creative. Simple drawings will suffice. Describe your drawing and submit it for a
