LET'S START

Did it ever come to you that you can make music in most out of everything? Watch the YouTube video
entitled "Stomp Out Loud Basketballs and Kitchen." Then, with your group, create a two-minute
performance using any material available and perform it in class.

LET'S MOVE AHEAD

Most instruments in the north are made of materials found in nature that imitate the natural sounds.
Music instruments may be made of bamboo, shell, wood, skin, vine, hair, and other materials found in
the tropics. They perform music either solo or in an ensemble. Instruments are classified according to
the manner of playing and according to the materials they are made of.

Gongs

The gongs of the North consist of six gongs in graduated sizes. Gongs from the north

are flat, made of bronze, iron, or brass. These instruments are highly priced instruments.
They signify wealth and status in the society. They are played on special occasions such as

peace pacts, weddings, rituals, and other festivities. Playing of gongs is prohibited when there is death in
the community. Gangsa palook can be played by striking the gong with unpadded sticks. The
gangsatoppaya is played with the palm of the hands in a sliding motion. The gongs

plated in an ensemble uses the interlock technique, where each player starts playing in

different entrances
