Module 1

(Simple Stress)

Overview
Materials are subject to different load concentration. Obviously, these materials are
experiencing Simple Stress. The concept of normal stress, shear stress, tensile stress and
compressive stress will be discussed in order to equip the learners the capability to calculate
the numerical value of each of the above-mentioned material’s stresses.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the worksheet/ module, the students must be able to;

1. Differentiate normal stress from shear stress.

2. Calculate the stress of the material due to tensile force.
3. Calculate the stress of the material due to compressive force.

Lecture Notes:
What is Simple Stress?

A simple stress is defined as the internal force which is resisting the external force per unit
area. It is denoted with σ Stress (σ)= F/A. Where; F = Force acting on the body.

What is Normal Stress and Shear Stress?

When a force acts perpendicular (or "normal") to the surface of an object, it exerts a normal
stress. When a force acts parallel to the surface of an object, it exerts a shear stress

What is Tensile Stress?

Tensile stress (σ) is the resistance of an object to a force that could tear it apart. ... Tensile
stress measures the strength of a material; therefore, it refers to a force that attempts to pull
apart or stretch a material.

What is Compressive Stress?

Compressive stress is a force that causes a material to deform to occupy a smaller volume.
When a material is experiencing a compressive stress, it is said to be under compression.

What is Shear stress?

Shear stress, force tending to cause deformation of a material by slippage along a plane or

planes parallel to the imposed stress.

What is Bearing Stress?

The stresses developed when two elastic bodies are forced together are termed bearing
stresses. They are localized on the surface of the material and may be very high due to the small
areas in contact.

B. Worksheet2 (Problem Solving: 10 points each)

Solve the following problem as indicated and show all necessary
computations/conversions. Use separate papers for the solution.

1. A nylon string has a diameter of 2 mm, pulled by a force of 100 N. Determine

the stress on it.
2. A compressive load of 200 N is used to deform a square bar measuring 8mm on
an edge. Calculate the compressive stress on the material.
3. A 2.0-m-long steel rod has a cross-sectional area of 0.30cm 2. The rod is a part of
a vertical support that holds a heavy 550-kg platform that hangs attached to the
rod’s lower end. Ignoring the weight of the rod, what is the tensile stress in the
rod?
