Traffic Laboratory EXP. NO.6: Spot Speed
Introduction:
The distribution of speeds of vehicles in a traffic at certain place on a road can be found through spot speed
studies. The speed of vehicles is defined as kilometers per hour(km/h). the spot speed study is carried out by
recording the speed of a sample of vehicles at the specified location. However, speed characteristics
identified by such a study will be valid only for traffic and environmental conditions that exist at the time of
the study.

Discussion:
• The study carried out at U.O.B, a 100-meter measured between
two points which shown in the fig. in the red doted lines, and
recorded the time each car takes to across these two points,
sample include 100 cars.
• From the curves the data blow shown:
I. 𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒(15 𝑚𝑝ℎ) = (14 −
29) 𝑚𝑝ℎ 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑠 67% 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑏𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛
II. 𝑃15 = 13 𝑚𝑝ℎ
III. 𝑃85 = 28.25𝑚𝑝ℎ
IV. 𝑃98 = 35𝑚𝑝ℎ
V. 𝑃50 = 20.65𝑚𝑝ℎ
𝑃85 −𝑝15 28.25−13
VI. 𝑆= 2
= 2
= 7.64
VII. 𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑒 = 23.42
• Should be notice that before the two points there was an obstacle which slow down the cars,
and that affect the curves.
