JOINING HANDS ASSOCIATION
INTRODUCTORY BACKGROUND:
The story of the founder of Joining Hands Association:
I Grace Nyawira aged 29yrs old and a single mother of one was born in 1985 in a
remote village called Kaitheri in Kirinyaga County. I am the last born of 8 siblings
According to my mum, my dad died when I was 8 months old and therefore never
came to know him. After his death, problems started when her in-laws who are
my uncles took everything that belonged to my dad and then chased her away.
Because of my tender age I did not realize what my mum underwent through. All
the same I went to school like any other child unaware of my environment. I later
came to realize my mum lived in hardship as a farm laborer in various homes.
She could be given work like digging farms and pit latrines where she pulled soil
from the pit using a jerrican tied with a rope. I stayed with her and learnt to pull
the soil using the same jerrican. Things worsened when we started going to our
neighbors to work so that we could be given food and a place to sleep. Luckily I
got a `good Samaritan’ who took me to live with her and in return helped her with
the domestic duties after school hours.
In the morning I could go with her children to school and in the evening
accompany them back. At home I washed their clothes and later prepare supper. I
would also fetch water and firewood sometimes. I had no time to do my
homework as they always did theirs for I was busy attending to their needs .What
was most annoying was that in the morning children used to carry food to school
for lunch and I had nothing for lunch. Despite all these I used to be number one
or two in all the classes up to standard six where I reached. The records are clear
at kaitheri Primary School and the head teacher can prove this.
Things worsened in standard six when I was sent home to collect the activity fee
which was used by the school to buy class desks and other items. My mother was
not able to pay the money and my education “hit the rock” It was surprising to
note that my ‘good Samaritan’ who was living with me failed to pay for me. After
all I was working for food and a place to sleep .No one came to my rescue. Soon I
became marketable in the village since I was now available as a farm hand in
various homes. Later I worked in different homes as a house help till I found my
way to Nairobi where I have worked in uncountable homes as a house help.
I have seen and taken many children to school that have grown up and I am
happy for them. Currently I am involved in washing clothes for people in different
homes where I am referred to as `grace the clothes washer’
2
Had I gotten a chance or someone to pay school fees for me I would be a
different person altogether but that is in the past now. That’s why I feel bad and
affected when I see children suffering and not going to school because of
problems not of their own making. I would wish to get these children, take them
to school, give them food and the basic necessities which include provision of
homes to the underprivileged (the vulnerable and the orphans) in the society.
Second phase:- To identify land and purchase the same so as to establish children
homes and schools for the Organization.
Project objectives:
Our paramount main objective is to reach out to the orphaned and vulnerable
children, to enrol them in schools and provide food (basic necessities) so that they
can be able to go to school. Given that a hungry child cannot be able to go to
school and study efficiently.
3
Our Recent Kerugoya & Laikipia visit reports:
We went and found large number of children both orphaned and vulnerable
waiting for us ready for food and other necessities. There were also disabled
children as well as the poor villagers also waiting for whatever we could offer.
We had food, which included beans, wheat flour, maize flour, vegetables etc. we
had also clothes. We distributed everything and people appreciated and wished us
to go back there again. We had also bar soaps, which we distributed to the
children who are within the school bracket so that they can be able to go to school
appropriately.
This occasion was held at St. Joseph Primary School. According to the
headteacher the schools and the community faced various challenges such as:-
1. Lack of school uniform
2. Poverty in the community
3. Drugs and alcoholism
4. Poor malnutrition
5. HIV/Aids prevalence
What is to be done
Provide school uniform to the most needy
Establish school feeding programmes for the poorest
Create awareness of the existing problems
Sensitize the community of the importance of hygiene and cleanliness.
Educate the community through public and social events on the existence
of these problems.
Women and youth empowerment through group formation and community
based organizations (CBO).

We as the joining hands association was touched by the plight of these children
.Being small as we are responded organized and contributed money to buy the
desks.
We set 13/3/14 as the presentation date. We left early in the morning to arrive at
1:30 pm. It was a long tedious journey.
When we arrived we found many people who included the children, teachers,
parents and the community at large waiting for us. They had come from far and
wide.
On presentation the community was moved to see such a small group coming
along distance to volunteer. They were happy and impressed that these children
will never learn seated on the classroom floor again.
According to the head teacher the school had only one desk which was donated
by a friendly school known as Dol Dol primary in the area. However the school
faced many other problems as follows:
Low school enrolment
Hunger and starvation
Early and forced marriages
HIV and AIDS
Cultural attitude and beliefs
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
Poor road network
Lack of toilets and sanitation in general
Water shortage
Poor malnutrion
Poverty among the community
Cattle rustling
Insecurity
WHAT IS TO BE DONE
Create the awareness of the existing problems
Women and the youth empowerment
Educate the community through public and social events on the existence
of these problems.
Changing the cultural attitude and beliefs of the community, which is
mainly of the Maasai community.

MISSION STATEMENT
Due to the rise in HIV/AIDS, breaking up of family structure and a poor economy
in Kenya, the children, especially the girls are left behind unprotected. There are
over 2 million orphans in Kenya and with over 2 million adults affected with
HIV/AIDS, there are more orphans being produced each day. Many girls succumb
to unwanted pregnancies and are forced into early marriages subject to sexual
and physical abuse. They live in such poverty that these girls and boys must give
up their childhood just to survive. This is why Joining Hands Association wants
to establish a safe-haven for these girls and likewise, we will have an extension
program to help the boys. Our centre will help build the confidence of these
children through education, feeding, medical assistance, counselling and overall
reassurance that there is a bright future. Joining Hands Association is committed
8
to rehabilitating these children who have been left behind to fend for themselves
on the streets of Kenya.
At the moment, due to a lack of finances, we are only able to feed the children
and provide counseling. Joining Hands Association looks forward to partner with
the Kenyan government and other Non-governmental Organization as
stakeholders who can provide trained social workers to identify the needs and
problems of the orphans. However, since we started the Feeding Programs, more
and more children show up every week, thus placing a great burden on our small
staff. There is an urgency to build a centre in the middle of the slums and at
County level where the orphans, and other displaced children, can relax, eat and
get away from the everyday struggles of life. Our objective is to bring joy back to
their lives by providing services that will cater to their basic needs and prepare
them for the future. Our $910,000 USD proposal is a 5-year program, which is
designed to help the entire community. By caring for the children, we will also
provide much needed services for the adults. By addressing the needs of the poor
in Kenya, starting with the children, in 5 years we expect to see lives change and
the community begin to prosper due to our assistance and intervention. We
believe that Joining Hands Association will be an example for all of Kenya, which
will be duplicated in slums, and Counties across Africa. Ultimately, Joining Hands
Association will open up doors of opportunity for the poor and take the burden off
the government. The initial start-up cost of $150,000 USD will enable us to
expand our Feeding Programs and thus, begin the process of changing lives in the
slums and Counties of Kenya.
Our main focus is helping orphans. Due to the lack of support for these children,
we at Joining Hands Association will focus on giving the orphans a better life. For
now, we feed nearly 300 orphans and provide guidance for them, but the more
we help, the more orphans and other children come seeking our assistance.
Ultimately, we desire to build a separate facility for the orphans and the
community, but for now, through donors assistance, we will provide food,
clothing, school supplies and medical assistance. With more and more orphans on
the streets everyday, there is a great need to assist them in their daily struggles.
Many orphans are traumatized by the psychological effects of watching their
parents die of AIDS, plus they are burdened with the stigma of being an AIDS
orphan. These children are vulnerable to malnutrition and are often the last in
9
line when it comes to food. Their education suffers as they become caregivers and
assume most domestic responsibility. They suffer physical and social insecurity
due to the lack of proper adult supervision. Girls are especially vulnerable to
sexual exploitation and consequently, HIV/AIDS is a big problem among female
orphans. Joining Hands Association hopes to relieve the burden of the well wishers
and churches who take in these orphans. Our centre will provide relief and
assistance to those who have dedicated their lives to helping these vulnerable
children. It is devastating for a child to lose both their parents to HIV/AIDS, but
they are double burdened with the negative perception of AIDS orphans. Our
Feeding Program is vital to the slums and all Counties in Kenya, as many children
rely on us for their only meal of the day. We will link with other agencies
supporting orphans and help with food and basic needs. Joining Hands Association
wants to instil hope in these children that someone loves them and someone cares
for them. Hope and love can go a long way in a child's life. Through government
assistance and adopt a child programs we will make the lives of these orphans one
of joy and happiness. Our proposed Centre will cater to all their needs and build
the community at the same time. We will change lives one orphan at a time,
ultimately, changing all of Kenya.
TEACHING SELF-SUFFICIENCY
Joining Hands Association will improve knowledge of causes and symptoms of
HIV/AIDS and other diseases through family planning and youth services, which
will give Kenyans the ability to live responsibly. Our centre will rid the
community of tribal taboos, especially those of HIV/AIDS orphans, through
sexual education, youth and peer counselling. We will train communities to
manage resources, expand farming capabilities, increase knowledge of
government support, thus improving the quality of life for all in the slums of
Kenya. Joining Hands Association will train and mobilize the community by
giving life skills and disease prevention tools. The orphans will be trained in
proper sanitation and hygiene, as well as, given adequate resources to live a
healthy life. This will improve the social and economic status of the poorest
communities in Kenya. Training will be given in care giving for the sick, life
support, and of course, tutoring and basic education for the children. Training
workshops will sensitize volunteers and staff to the issues of those living in the
slums, primarily HIV/AIDS prevention and economic development. Job training
will encourage the community to give back to the program and life skills will
enable Kenyans to become self-sufficient while at the same time giving them
hope for the future. When a person is taught how to provide for themselves,
they become more confident, they become happy and they become an asset to
the community rather than a liability. A productive County slum community will
make Kenya a better place for everyone.
10
Joining Hands Association aims to provide better counselling, address the stigma
of HIV/AIDS and improve access to quality programs to foster a good and healthy
life for the poor of Kenya. Our objective is to improve the lives of the children and
the entire community, through Feeding Programs, education assistance and life-
skills training. We will increase the knowledge of the youth concerning sexual
activity through counselling, outreach programs, peer groups and referral services.
Many young girls refuse help because of the stigma of seeking assistance for
sexual problems. Joining Hands Association will provide a comfortable, loving and
confidential environment where these girls can openly discuss and seek solutions
to their problems. A well trained staff will promote abstinence and condom use, as
well as, target the younger children because it is easier to keep a child from
engaging in dangerous sexual activities, as opposed to those who are already
involved in this counter productive lifestyle. Joining Hands Association will provide
youth training workshops, which will include field trips youth, health and social
services. We hope to form a strong alliance with the same-minded international
partners worldwide, in hopes to provide reliable services of medicines and much
needed supplies, resources and health services. Our program will promote public
awareness and provide training in disease prevention, gender issues, medical
needs and basic educational assistance. The investment program will develop
business and marketing skills and improve access to information through
computer training and improved reading skills at our library. Employment framing
workshops will enable the community to help itself, and in the end, help Kenya.
Our goal is to reduce poverty and promote human rights through community
development, food and medical relief and being an advocate for the poor. Youth
groups, women's groups, men's groups and elderly groups will be established to
deal with individual issues. Joining Hands Association will have a medical outreach
service which will provide clean water, proper utilities, good sanitation, classrooms
to study, a kitchen and dining hall for youth and clients, with the goal of improving
one's basic understanding of how to live a good and healthy life. Joining Hands
Association will provide shelter, clothing, medicine, support, counselling and
training which will involve the entire community. Our social service center will
provide community groups and volunteers a place to increase their knowledge
about their issues and give them a way to support the programs. Children will be
afforded the opportunity to grow and be productive members of society. Overall,
Joining Hands Association will be a light in the middle of the dark slums. It will be
the place where children and adults come for help, advice and even recreational
activities. This project will give the poorest in Kenya hope for a better future and
make them proud to be members of their community. We will change lives in the
County slums of Kenya one community at a time, ultimately, impacting all citizens
of Kenya.
11
Joining Hands Association's goal is to promote change in the community by giving
the people the necessary tools to turn their lives around. We will create positive
behaviour patterns and social outlets to combat the negative influences in the
Counties slums. Knowledge and practice of positive behaviour, especially
adolescent reproductive health, will improve the lifestyle choices in the
community. Our challenge is the growing gap between the rich and the poor in
Kenya. As Kenya prospers, the poor are not seeing any befits and are thus being
left behind. Poverty breeds disease and violence; thus, the reduction of poverty is
good for all, both rich and poor alike. Changing the lifestyles of the poor will have
a positive impact on all of Kenya. Our objective is to change the mind set of young
girls who are afraid to talk to their parents for fear of punishment by providing
counsellors, guidance and instructive information. Many parents do not know
what to tell their children because they do not know the answers themselves.
Unfortunately, many grandparents have become nurses for their sick children and
caregivers for their grandchildren. They become physically, socially and
economically deprived, thus we want to close the communication gap between the
young and the old, in many cases, and this will be done by teaching English to the
grandparents. Change will come by empowering the community economically
through seminars, workshops and job skills training. Training will focus on
unemployed youth, widowed and single mothers and the future of the children.
Lack of nutrition also leads to many health problems, especially deficiencies in
iodine, iron, vitamin A, zinc, therefore, Joining Hands Association will generate
activities to promote proper nutrition, especially for the children who are still
developing physically. Our center will increase the dialogue with parents and care
givers to ensure the community is equipped and ready to change. Our hope is to
help the most vulnerable in Kenya by changing their lives and changing their
outlook on life by helping the community to recognize the resources available.
We will encourage maximum participation; also, we will be sensitive to cultures as
we seek partners to promote economic recovery, peace building as we prepare the
slums of Kenya for the future. Change is inevitable, weather good or bad. Joining
Hands Association's goal is to make a positive impact in the County slums of
Kenya and be a source of inspiration for those who want to change, but just need
help.
NETWORKING WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
Joining Hands Association will work closely with NGO's, donors and international
partners to promote awareness of the plight of the poor in Kenya. We will use
radio, television, newspapers, public events and build coalitions to seek assistance
to eradicate poverty. We will disseminate information, educate and communicate
messages to the poor, establish youth conferences and create a promotional
campaign to rid the stigma of HIV/AIDS and testing among the poor. There will
be a call to action to eradicate poverty in Kenya by empowering the community,
attaining small business grants and promoting school meal programs. Joining
Hands Association will increase the involvement of adults, parents, teachers,
associations, health professionals, pharmacists, religious leaders and government
12
agencies. Our coalition will help foster better relations concerning health issues,
education, service delivery and poverty. Joining Hands Association will enhance
the public image of the slums through advocacy and strengthening relationships
with our partners. We will promote accountability of government agencies and
advocate awareness of global issues among decision makers. We want to make
poverty in Kenya a priority, not an afterthought. Joining Hands Association will
build up the voice of NGO's and the poor through media awareness. We will raise
the understanding of the burden and the impact poverty has on Kenya and the
rest of the world through training, teaching and media outlets. Consequently, we
hope to increase the quality and quantity of local and international media outlets.
Involvement of politicians, health professionals and global leaders will help
develop networks, provide solutions, raise leaders and make visible the problems
facing the children and the poor in Kenya. Donations of food, medical supplies,
school materials and basic necessities of life will help limit the cost of the program.
Our objective is to tell the world that with their help, Kenya can be a productive
member of the global community. As we raise awareness of poverty and empower
the poor, Kenya will become a shining example of change in Africa.
Many women and girls are raped, abused and neglected which exposes them to
disease and low self-esteem. Our goal is to encourage men to support women's
rights and commit to being responsible leaders by being caring, respectful and
honest. This will have a tremendous long-term benefit for all of Kenya. Women
and girls are most disadvantaged because of the great burden men and society
place upon them as care givers and heads of households. Poor women and girls
need to have access to clean water, proper sanitation and be provided an
opportunity to earn a living in the male-dominated world. Our center will help
reduce the child mortality rate by strengthening ties to medical facilities and
increasing reproductive health knowledge. Skilled health workers in pre and post
natal care will help our clients and access to family planning will be available,
especially for teenagers. Joining Hands Association will enhance the role of women
in society and provide a voice for those who have been voiceless for too long.
HIV/AIDS in women far surpasses men because the virus is easily transmitted
from male to female. These women and girls thus become subject to the disease
because many men do not care if they infect them or not. With no voice, no
money, these women and girls become candidates for prostitution, drugs and
13
other behaviour detrimental to society. Joining Hands Association will educate
these women and girls and teach them self-help and provide them with the tools
necessary to become a productive part of society and not merely baby makers.
Our center will have a special room for young girls to promote self-esteem,
provide for their needs, and encourage them to stay strong through training and
counselling. Women are the backbone of the Kenyan society, they cook, clean,
take care of the children, work and they do everything that needs to be done to
survive. Joining Hands Association will place special emphasis on ensuring the
backbone stays strong.
IMPACT ON COMMUNITY
Joining Hands Association will impact the community by getting the youth involved
in positive activities, changing attitudes about poverty and most of all, creating an
atmosphere of constructive behavioural patterns. Our educational, training and
health programs will increase the knowledge of the community, thus increasing
their ability to become self-sufficient. Joining Hands Association trained
14
counsellors will assess the workshops and perform follow-up visits and extra
training when necessary. Our executive staff will monitor visits and evaluate the
success of the program through interviews and tangible evidence and data of
change in the community. The community will be given training manuals,
educational materials and we will ensure posters, presentations and newsletter
reach the poor on a regular basis. E-forums will be used to expose the community
to the growing world around their slums. The community will develop new sources
of financing and improved access to health and social services. Initiatives in
research and development will be created due to the high demand of the poor and
improved communication. The ability of communities to become self-reliant and
the increase of the voice of the poor in Kenya will be the overall objective. Joining
Hands Association will document our program through interventions and
feedbacks from the community and networking organizations. Our center will use
collection and analysis of data to improve communication and the utilization of this
information concerning global health and poverty issues. Population based
information regarding diseases, burdens on the poor, access to healthcare,
resources and delivery of these resources will be documented to better utilize our
resources. Our program documentation will create cost-effective methods to help
all of Kenya. Joining Hands
Association will determine the supply vs. demand in the slums and we will closely
monitor all results. We will use local products to create a demand for good and
ultimately, the poor Kenyans will be actively engaged in economic development
and advocacy for their communities. Our program data collection will establish
heath, nutrition, social, psychological, physiological and economic needs of the
poor. We will develop intervention strategies to determine the social, economic
and nutritional needs of orphans, women and girls. Joining Hands Association will
increase knowledge through training women in HIV/AIDS, health management
and appropriate care giving practices. Our center will cooperate with government,
NGO's, donors and international organizations to reduce the suffering of the poor,
especially the orphans. Joining Hands Association will develop the most cost-
effective way to reach as many people as possible. We hope to see a sustainable
reduction in HIV/AIDS cases through testing, early detection and effective
intervention. Basic hygiene and medical support will enable a healthier and more
vibrant community. The community will become prosperous and the poor will be
empowered to succeed. Joining Hands Association will bring pride and self-
sufficiency back to the poorest County slums of Kenya. Many people, especially
orphans and young girls, see the world as a dark and ugly place. Our vision is for
Joining Hands Association to be light in this dark world and to change lives,
change behaviour and bring back a sense of hope to the forgotten people of
Kenya, the orphans and the poor. Joining Hands Association will stand tall in the
midst of poverty as a beacon of a promise to the Kenyan people that there is a
light at the end of their struggles. As a result, we can only be this light if we can
get support from willing partners. Help Joining Hands Association change lives
