MATHEMATICAL WAYS OF EXPRESSING
CONCENTRATION.

PERCENT by volume v/v Dilution

PERCENT by mass m/m Mole Fraction

Molarity M =n/L

Molality m= n/kg
Molarity of a solution is defined as the number of moles of
solute dissolved in one liter of solution.

Moles of solute n
Molarity = M= L
Liter of solution

0.25M is same as 0.25 mol

1L
Take note: In solving for the concentration molarity, all volume
units must be in Liters.
C.F. Volume = 1L = 1000mL = 1000 cm3
Mass = 1Kg = 1000g
What is the molarity of a solution prepared by dissolving 1.5
mole sodium chloride in enough water to prepare 500mL of
solution?

Given: Computation:
Moles of solute (n) = 1.5 mol Convert mL to L = 1L = 1000mL
Vol of solution = 500mL 1L
500mL x = 0.500L
1000mL
Required: molarity M = n/L

Equation: M = n/L 1.5 mol

M= =3
0.500L

Final answer: 3.0 mol/L

Calculate the molarity of a solution for which enough water is
added to 8.0g of NaOH to prepare 100mL of solution. The molar
mass of NaOH is 40g/mol.

Given: Computation: solve for n and L

Mass of solute = 8.0g 1L
Vol. = 100mL x = 0.100L
1000mL
Vol. of sol’n= 100mL
8.0g
Molar mass NaOH= 40g/mol n= =0.20mol
40g/mol
Required = molarity
0.20 mole
Equations = M = n/L M=
0.100L
moles = mass solute (g) = 2.0 mol/L or
Molar mass Final ans. = 2.0M
Calculate the mass of solute needed to prepare 500mL of 2M HCl
(MM HCl = 36.45g/mol)
(Solution stoichiometry)

Given: vol of sol’n = 500ml concentration in molarity= 2M HCl

Molar mass = 36.45g/mol

Required = mass of solute

Equation: Dimensional analysis

Given vol x Liter conversion x Conc. in molarity x Molar mass ratio

1L x 2 mol 36.45g = 36.45g

500mL x x
1000mL 1L 1 mol

Final ans. = 36.5g

What volume of solution is prepared from 2.0g NaOH(MM=
40g/mol) with a concentration of 0.6M.
(Solution stoichiometry)
Given: Mass of solute = 2.0g Conc. in Molarity = 0.6 M
MM of solute = 40g/mol
Required: Volume of solution
Equation/ dimensional analysis:

Mass of solute x Molar mass ratio x Conc. in Molarity

1 mol 1L
2.0g NaOH x x 0.6 mol = 0.8333333…..L
40g

Final ans. = 0.83L
