“BEING A TEACHER”

It’s been two years now since COVID19 disrupted our normal ways of living most
especially in education. As a result, education has changed drastically and with that, we
pushed schooling on to online teaching and learning. But life must go on and our dreams
must continue, despite the current situation. But have you ever thought what it’s like to be a
teacher during this pandemic?
According to the letter written by Mrs. Cruz, a retiring primary school principal in the
Philippines, to her son Jose Cruz, an aspiring teacher, “Being a teacher is indeed a noble
calling. You have the power to shape the minds of future generations. However, it may not
be as easy as during my time.” I am totally agreed with this, I saw how dedicated my
professors are, and even my family members who are a teacher as well that as pandemic
hits the whole world, there are a lot of changes in our education. But they are "TEACHERS"
who never stop working for the sake of their learners. Though, they struggled so much in
going to their working places, and the fact that their lives are at stake, and even some of our
teachers are adjusting and trying to adapt changes especially with the use of ICT to
supplement learning because of the Covid-19, still their willingness to continue serving our
Filipino learners is always their desire.
In addition, Mrs. Cruz also highlighted that “The average class size has increased
through the years.” Indeed, this is really happening in our school for example in our class,
we are 54 students versus 1 teacher. And that is definitely hard because our professors
need to ensure that all students are learning and engaging with the appropriate
interventions. Despite of class size, teachers have gone above and beyond to ensure that
the education of their students is not hampered.
And with this, it made me realized that as a student teacher and as an aspiring
teacher, there’s a lot of challenges awaiting in our profession. But we need to be ready for
these and that is the reason why our professors and the university itself are preparing us so
much. This is to make sure that before we graduate and start teaching, we are competent
and we are fully committed to becoming the best possible teacher in the next generation.

Because no one knows what is our education system will be in the next 10 to 20 years and
that is something that we need to look forwards as a student teacher.
And at the end of student teaching experience in the course that I am taking right
now, I am hoping that I will perform the best that I could and that I will take away as much
as possible from the experience. I want to learn different pedagogical techniques through
my future cooperating teacher and our supervisor as well as learn more about the ways
students learn and behave. And I want to tell myself 6 months from now that “I am ready to
do this for real. I am ready to have my own classroom and work with students on a daily
basis.” I want to gain confidence in my abilities to teach. I want to know that I can give a
lesson that enables students to master the material; if the students do not understand the
first time, I want to have the ability to rework my way of presenting the information so that
the students understand. I want to be one of those teachers that students remember years
and years later. My student teaching is the first step towards becoming that kind of teacher,
and I am going to do everything possible to get myself closer to that goal.
